2015 Long Course Nationals - Spire Institute

I've been watching and waiting for information regarding Long Course Nationals - particularly hotel information. I finally found a link on the Spire site to USMS hotels. As I began the process, I found this curious statement: This is a "Stay to Play" tournament. All teams are required to reserve a hotel room block through Traveling Teams in order to participate in the tournament. Does this mean that individuals are prohibited from booking their own rooms? Due to the lack of information, many of us have already booked rooms that meet our personal needs. Can someone clarify?
  • Getting into this too late as Sleep Inn when I called mentioning summer nationals is already sold out. Are there any dorms or temporary housing near Spire Institute? I don't think I could drive 24 miles to nearest hotel.
  • I got a room yesterday at the Hampton inn in Ashtabul, which was one exit and about 7 miles from Spire.
  • I got a room at Quail Hollow this afternoon ... 18 miles out.
  • Psych sheets are now posted: www.usms.org/.../ Meet Roster: www.usms.org/.../meetentrants.php Team Roster: www.usms.org/.../teamroster.php Swimmer Lookup: www.usms.org/.../lookup.php Because of the 10-lane course, we will NOT drop the sixth event. All events 200 meters and up will be deck seeded, and all 50s and 100s will be preseeded. All seeding decisions will be announced soon. Heat sheets for preseeded events, as well as the estimated timeline, are expected to be posted on or about July 24. Empty lanes can dampen competitive conditions and we'd like to avoid that when possible. Although we cannot offer any refunds, if you are absolutely certain you will not be swimming certain events (particularly the preseeded 50s and 100s), please let us know and you'll be removed from those events to cut down on empty lanes and provide for more competitive heats. If your travel plans prohibit you from swimming certain events please be considerate and let us know before we seed the meet. Please note that once we take you out of an event, we cannot put you back in. Scratches will be accepted through July 17. Please email scratches or entry errors to championship@usms.org. Thanks, Jeff Roddin USMS Championship Committee I am assuming the 200s will be seeded by age group, right?
  • I'm very frustrated with that clause about no outside food or beverage. This isn't a movie theater, this is a competitive venue. All I "eat" when racing is energy gels, a sports drink and occasionally a handful of dry cereal. Am I really going to get banned from the facility for consuming things I know work for my digestive system?

I wonder if the relative lack of close hotels impacted the registration this year. 911 seems low. A list of all previous LC Nationals, with attendance, can be found in Appendix F of the USMS rule book: www.usms.org/.../appf.pdf Recent meets and attendance: 2007, The Woodlands, Texas: 911 2008, Mt. Hood, Oregon: 1,131 2009, Indianapolis, Indiana: 1,150 2010, San Juan, Puerto Rico: 632 2011, Auburn, Alabama: 688 2012, Omaha, Nebraska: 1,257 2013, Mission Viejo, California: 1,393 2014, College Park, Maryland: 1,024 2015, Geneva, Ohio: 968
  • I think you should do your own thing and not be intimidated by this statement. As long as you don't bring in a gigantic rolling cooler and keep your needs in your backpack, no one will be the wiser. If it turns out otherwise, we all will have a problem. Beg for forgiveness rather than asking for permission.
  • I am assuming the 200s will be seeded by age group, right? Let's hope so. It really upsets me when I'm one of the top seeds in my age group and I get assigned an outside lane swimming against random people who aren't my age group competitors.
