Just checked with Hilton and they said they rooms booked under USMS were all king bed rooms--is there any way to change/add double bed rooms to the block? I'm sure many of us are going to be sharing rooms and would like our own bed =)
I believe the hotel arrangements are set-up by the event host. I suggest you contact them directly to see if they can change their arrangements.
How do we reach them.I notice the special rates don't start until 5-1,the first day of the meet.
I have now checked with several hotels.Most don't start the special rate until 5-1,which seems to discriminate against distance swimmers and those who like to arrive early.The Plaza Suites is an exception and I got reservations there.Why did the special rates start so late? Search for rooms in Santa Clara for the desired dates. Use the subsequent Map option to narrow the results to just Santa Clara. Use the star ratings and amenities to pick what type of hotel you want and compare prices. Pay for the one you choose. You will then find out where you are staying. In my experience, Hotwire has always been the best deal by far. After I buy on Hotwire, I usually look for the best price for the hotel I already booked. Hotwire has always been way less. The risk? You don't know which hotel you booked until after you paid for it. However, using their map, ratings and amenities to guide the decision making, I've never been disappointed.

Rooms at the Hilton have been modified to either king beds or Doubles please call back if you would like to book.
When I google hotels near the pool, there are quite a few much closer than those on the meet-sponsored hotel list. Does anyone know why those are not sponsored hotels? Is it a sketchy neighborhood?
The neighborhood is not sketchy. I walked .8 mile from Mariani's in the daylight and at dusk and felt quite comfortable through a residential neighborhood. Some hotels do not get listed because they are maybe not large enough to give a special room rate or are unwilling to do so. USMS also has sponsors like Marriott and we like to give them some business. The four hotels that are grouped with the shuttle can accommodate many swimmers and this will be a large meet.
Thank you Sandi. I ended up booking at the Maple Tree anyway, but I was bummed that the discounted room rate doesn't apply to Wednesday night's stay. That's why I was checking out hotels on google to compare rates.
