OK, it may be over a year away but why not start a thread on 2011 Short Course (Spring) Nationals? This meet will be held at the newly-renovated Kino Aquatics Center in Mesa, which is just east of Phoenix. So go ahead and pipe in, I'm sure we will get some good conversation flowing.
Last I heard it was to be on saturday (during the meet) and not "official" which sort of blows...this was the website but maybe they are considering someone else. http://www.dcbadventures.com/
I could be wrong, but this should be a USMS-sanctioned event, it's just not part of Nationals. All of the swim events put on by DCB this past year were sanctioned by USMS.

Sorry by not official, I meant not a national championship. DCB, at least for last the two years, has put on USMS sanctioned races.
Kurt, the open water races that have been held at the same time as other nationals have never been "National Championships"....those are bid on and help at a different time. I'm with you and would like to see the possibility of them tied together but that hasn't happened yet.
Also, we will certainly be supporting DCB's hosting this event....however the insurance, requirements for officials, logistics, etc. just simply did not make sense. What did make sense is to work with these guys to make sure the word got out and let folks who are interested in OW know their will be a VERY good option for them on Saturday as well as a chance to swim some events at Nationals!

I know it wasn't but the back of my t-shirt from Clovis open water mile says "2009 USMS national one-mile open water championship." They also held it on Monday which probably would help in participation.
Maybe it's logistically too hard, but it would be nice to see open water events at each nationals as I don't really want to travel separately to Lake Placid, Ft. Myers, Indiana, Ogallala, or wherever the open water championships happen to reside. I'm sure in many cases you could farm out all the work of organization and volunteering to the local open water gurus (in this case DCB). It would certainly would improve the quality of swimmers at the events (outcome may be the same...Erwin for the win).

1) change the rules if that is the only thing keeping them separate.
2) the open water event in Mesa is only on that weekend because there was thought in making it combined with nationals (he would have done it on monday afterward like Clovis as well).:)

Actually not true Kurt! The open water races that have been held on the Monday following pool nationals have had VERY low turnout (around 200 on average)...regardless of whether we ran both events or not I was always in favor of holding the event on Saturday.
Truth is by doing it this way we are more likely to get folks more interested in swimming OW to possibly attend nationals for an event or two, especially by offering a 1 mile, 2k & 4k which has not been done in the past. Bottom line is DCB runs a great event and having it the Saturday of our meet means you will see double to triple the number of participants PLUS kids divisions.
