Austin just canceled SXSW. Is it safe to think Nationals will go on as planned. Is it safe to do so. I really want to go to Nationals, but I am 71 and concerned.
Why is that? People spit in the pool, swim when they have colds, don't shower, pee in the pool. That's a LOT of germs.
well in the case of this and other recent Coronaviruses, chlorine in even small amounts in water has been proven effective at killing the virus. So I think the survival time for this virus in a pool with standard chlorine levels is very short.
A swimming pool would be the most difficult place to transmit a virus.

The issue surrounding COVID-19 is a big one with my wife and I. A little background. We had the flu shot and then proceeded to catch a different flu 3 times from early November 2019 to late February 2020. This has never happened to either of us before. My wife still has not completely recovered and has not been in the pool for almost 4 weeks. She is a little over a year removed from *** cancer surgery and radiation and still has not regained the strength that she had before the diagnosis. We are both over 61 years of age and retired. We both had careers in the health field, me an REHS, her an RN. My last swim workout was Monday and I am still tired. Now add the situation of COVID-19. We have already cancelled a hotel reservation for later this month and will not be entering any swim meets or clinics that we had planned on going to. I have already skipped 2 swim meets. Since our state and county declared a state emergency due to COVID-19, we both know that things are going will soon be different. We both understand epidemiology very well and have worn and used PPE.
We just do not know enough about COVID-19 to make better decisions other than to just stay put and wait it out. We would like to get back in the pool with our teammates, and workout at the fitness center.
U.S. Masters Swimming is closely following updates regarding COVID-19 (also called the coronavirus) and will continue to operate as usual, which includes the sanctioning and hosting of events. USMS will abide by the recommendations made by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention and other health officials to ensure the safety of athletes, coaches, volunteers, fans, and staff at our events.
USMS recommends that all clubs, workout groups, and event directors refer to the CDC and other local health officials for updates on COVID-19 in their area, and also recommends that all clubs, workout groups, and event directors promote prevention best practices and consider taking additional measures, including having hand sanitizer readily available and performing extra disinfection of areas of possible transmission (e.g., restrooms, showers, doors). In order to best support our members at this time, USMS encourages event directors to have flexible refund policies.
USMS encourages all swimmers to adhere to best health practices and follow local health officials for updates, and discourages swimmers or fans who are sick from attending workouts or events.
We’re continuing to move forward with our planning for the 2020 USMS Spring National Championship in San Antonio. We’re working closely with our hosts, Northside ISD Aquatics and San Antonio Sports, to ensure a safe and enjoyable event. Participants who do not wish to compete will have until March 30 to request a full refund by contacting events@usmastersswimming.org. (Here is the CDC's guidance for travelers.)
USMS is also continuing to prepare for the 2020 FINIS College Club Swimming National Championship in North Carolina, working closely with the meet host and the Greensboro Aquatic Center.
We’ll continue to monitor the COVID-19 outbreak diligently and provide updates and information to our members through email communications as they become available. We thank you in advance for taking every precaution to protect yourself and others.
This may be foreshadowing...
USA Swimming canceled ALL USA Swimming hosted events. Also, USA Swimming just released this statement: "we also strongly recommend that our LSCs and clubs suspend all USA Swimming-sanctioned events across the country for the next 30 days."
I recognize that this is not our governing body and the meet is outside of the 30 day window.
In Dr. Dickson (and chlorine), I trust! :applaud:
Also, watching/reading SwimSwam, I see all the college conference championships continuing to go, no talk of NCAAs being cancelled.
Maybe we can do what they're talking about with the NCAA basketball tournament ... no fans allowed!
But, since there are never any fans for a Masters meet anyhow, the show must go on.
The NCAA just cancelled all winter and spring championships, including March Madness.
