Nationals and Coronavirus.

Austin just canceled SXSW. Is it safe to think Nationals will go on as planned. Is it safe to do so. I really want to go to Nationals, but I am 71 and concerned.
  • They just cancelled our Oregon Association Meet.
  • This may be foreshadowing... USA Swimming canceled ALL USA Swimming hosted events. Also, USA Swimming just released this statement: "we also strongly recommend that our LSCs and clubs suspend all USA Swimming-sanctioned events across the country for the next 30 days." I recognize that this is not our governing body and the meet is outside of the 30 day window. Here's the link for the USA Swimming statement: www.usaswimming.org/.../coronavirus-(covid-19)-update I just sent it to my fellow Georgia Masters board members as a heads-up for our March 28-29 meet. I'm guessing USMS will follow USA Swimming's lead on this. Rob Copeland, what do you think about this? Nationals is outside of the window, but what about meets WITHIN the window? Edit: Our meet was cancelled on 3/13.
  • I saw a chart with 133 Italian deaths by age Under 40 - none 40-49 - 1 50-59 - 1 60-69 - 14 70-79 - 39 80-89 - 60 90-99 - 18 98.5% of the deaths were over-60's and fully half of the deaths were people older than 82 years old. Look at your driver's license and do the math before you fly anywhere. Under 40? Maybe not as scary as kissing someone with a cold. Note: This data is a couple of days old, so is seriously outdated. I was not able to find the exact chart on the internet, but here's a link that tells pretty much the same story. www.businessinsider.com/italy-coronavirus-old-population-cases-death-rate-2020-3 The problem isn't you, it is that the virus is very contagious, and takes days before symptoms express themselves. Although it may not hurt you, you may transmit it to others. I can't find it, now, but each affected person is transmitting this to 5-6 others, versus less than 1 for the common flu. And mortality rates are an order of magnitude higher. Large gatherings increase the likelihood of contamination several orders of magnitude. Airports? Stadiums? Yeah, those are bad. I was disappointed for so many kids I know today. Some kids on my kids' team were down in Atlanta, at the pool ready to get in some warm up laps when they cancelled the Age Group sectional meet at about 3:00 today. Several of my girls' friends from other teams were finishing their seasons at NCSA's in Orlando. Both chances, gone. Feel really sorry for those kids.

USMS Nationals is a wonderful experience for all that can make the voyage of getting there and have a safe event, but it would be a terrible experience if we would lose one of a fellow friends in our community of swimmers because of a lack of complete understanding of what this virus means. Knowing many friends in this sport for more than 50 years and now getting up there myself that thought of invincibility with my health is always on my mind. Respecting the knowledge of specialists and health professionals that study these things all the time-We should all stop and listen to them. Remember this isn’t just about the individual, but the community that one lives in and what they can bring back to the ones that are most vulnerable with underlining health conditions. Boy would that suck to find out I gave it to someone else! 2020 YMCA Short Course Nationals for 3/30-4/3 in Greensboro was canceled for youths- did they do the right thing? JO Nationals in Santa Clara Co. was canceled, so did they do the right thing? It’s a bigger picture than just you and me. I’ve been training hard this year myself-but to me it’s not a big thing to wait until this thing goes away and making it safe for everyone again! Just my thoughts-have a great swim:)
  • Illinois and Wisconsin have just cancelled their state meets! Will this put Nationals on an alert to really think of canceling?

  • Illinois and Wisconsin have just cancelled their state meets! Will this put Nationals on an alert to really think of canceling? Kaczm, thank you for your thoughtful post. I may stand alone on this, but I agree with you. I wasn't planning on going to Nationals this year, but I am now considering whether I should sign up for a Georgia meet that is supposed to take place on March 28-29. My trip to California in late April to see my frail 92-year-old Mom? Notta. Our European cruise in mid-May? Put a fork in it. Remember "staycation" being the buzzword and the in thing? It's looking like staycations will make a comeback. :badday: Best wishes to all of you, your family, your friends, and your communities. Stay healthy, and stay safe.
  • After a string of illnesses and injuries, I have been feeling really able to train for the first time since last summer. I have been really looking forward to San Antonio. I started this thread to get everyones opinion. I still haven't given up on going. It is hard to separate the science from the hype, but the NBA season is on hold and Oregon has banned gatherings of over 250 people. I guess, as it stands now USMS is giving me until March 30th to decide, so I'm wait and see.
