With a short work week and having eaten too much junk over Christmas its bugging me. SO...I thought that maybe this week I'd just do 100 x 100 outta the blue maybe on Wednesday AM or Thursday AM. I train alone so it will put me to the test just to see if I can focus for 120-180 minutes and stick to it.
So I'm looking for some advice on how to break them up. Obviously the first 10-20 will be warm-up, build at most. So I'm thinking something like this....feel free to add/suggest more. I'm just pulling this out of my ass.
1-10 Warm-up @ 2:00
11-20 Kick @ 2:00
21-30 Pull @ 1:30
31-40 Free @ 1:20 (hold 1:10's)
41-50 IM @ 1:45
5-10 Minute Food/Drink Break
51-60 Kick w/ Fins @ 1:40
61-70 Odds: Stroke @ 1:40 Evens: Drill @ 1:40
71-80 Pull w/ Paddles & Snorkel
81-90 IM Order/Free by 25's @ 1:45
and to finish it off:
91-100 Hold Best Avg. @ 1:30

So I made it! 2 hrs and 45 min (including a 200 warmdown). I didn't take my scheduled break as I felt good and didn't want to cool down at that point. On 21-60 I pretty much held 1:07-1:10's. I got a bit tired after those, but felt strong the whole way, had good turns, and good streamlines throughout. Ended up finishing with a 1:06 on the last 100.
The only real pain I have afterwards is a nice chaff mark on the inside of my right thigh where my squard Speedo endurance rode up a bit too much. I guess I need to get a jammer.
Looking back I think it would be a good challenge to do them all on 1:25 or 1:20.....that would give me anywhere from 10-15 seconds rest at most if you can maintain it throughout.
Good Job! I wish I was that fast. Mine was more of a 50x100@1:40 holding between 1:30-1:32. Then when the kids came in they did 100x50@1:00 and I did the first 50 of those with fins on and switched up the strokes did 20 as kick, 10 fly, 10 back and 10 more kick.
Regardless, good job Donna!!:applaud:
I had two opportunities to swim 100xN over the past few days. On 12/31 I swam 100x50 with the local YWCA masters team. They organize it as more of a workout (12x50 of this, then 8x50 of that, etc) so the intervals vary. On 1/2 the Evanston Masters did 100x100, with lanes from 1:30/100 to (I think) 2:20/100. I swam in the 1:40 interval lane through 60, then hopped over to the 1:30 lane for a few. I quickly realized I wasn't going to get enough rest (!!!) then hopped back to the 1:40 lane, but the damage was done. I got out at 80. I'm sure I could have made 100, but I wasn't all that interested in testing my limits. Still, I was fairly wiped yesterday. Went to practice and did a pretty easy 2000 just to loosen up...

Just to add to Ande's post.
I swam the 110 x 100 yds "workout" New Years Day. That is the pool where I swim 4 times a week.
The number 110 has a root. One of our swimmers (and now one of our coaches) swam 85 x 100 in 1985. He and his buddies added one 100 per year. Hence we swam 109 x 100 in 2009 and 110 x 100 in 2010. Next year we will swim 111.
Most of us swam them on a 1:50 interval. Very makeable. Our goal was not to test our aerobic fitness but simply to enjoy swimming a few hours as a group on a cold clear New Years Day. We were generally repeating 1:20-1:30. A few wore fins for an extra boost at times to make the interval. A few others swam on a 2:00 interval or something else. A few swam 80 or so, another swam 90 x 100.
It was a fun morning - and we enjoyed our hamburgers and beer afterwards!
I am in awe of you guys… having only just joined the forum I had no idea how quickly people swam!! And I thought I was a bit mad with the training I do – but you lot are truly bonkers!! The trouble is that when I hear of someone doing something like 100x100 I feel driven to have a go myself Grrrr…. I guess I would be repeating on around 1:40-45 to get 15s rest!
On another note – I am determined to get quicker this year. The other day I did a 34s 50 freestyle at the end of a 2hr squad session so I guess a 30ish is possible (have never competed). I am 51 years old and currently swim about four times a week doing about 12-14km. I also do other stuff, running, rowing and general gym work making about 10-12 hours a week. I would welcome any advice, however radical as to how to get down to a 60s 100 and the ability to hold a 75s pace over say a 2k set? Cheers Nick
You guys are all ANIMALS! I would have been up for this back in my 20's, but those years are long since past. As my birthday is on Dec. 30, I convinced 12 of my good friends to swim with me, 56 x 100 on 1:30. I started this ritual on my 40th and look forward to this expression of making another lap around the sun each year. Held them all below 1:17 and actually could have kept going. Maybe on my 60th I will do 100 just to see if I can!

You could do it, I'm convinced! Just like you said...you could have kept going. I had originally scheduled a break at 50, but you get into that rhythm and just don't want to stop. I always tell people swimming, at least distance, is a lot like running....once you find that groove you just want to keep going and it just comes automatic.:agree:
