Short axis drills?

Looking for some short axis drills, for technique primarily and strength secondly Anybody got any? BTW, been back in the pool for a couple months, taking it REALLY slow after being laid out for over a year with a back injury. So very grateful to be back in the water
  • If you do kick, and jump off the bottom, with fins or monofin, you could actually go airborne out of the water. Flipper, look out. Yes, but Flipper has that cute "laugh". Kind of hard duplicating that I would think... :) Skip

Something must be wrong. You gotta video of it that you can post? Don't forget that today is Columbus Day and the pool is probably closed so don't be running out there to work on this right away. Maybe there's too much knee action. We want to initiate all motion from the torso (think shoulders, chest & rump) with the abs sucked in and head as still as possible. Actually, my pool was open yesterday, and we had practice. I didn't get a chance to really work on them, though, since we were doing 200s non-stop all practice (with some 300s and 100s thrown in for fun). I did focus on the EVF stuff mentioned in the swim forum though. It's funny, when it's time to warm down, and I'm relaxed, it is a lot easier to swim with proper technique. That's what everyone says, but when I'm going for speed, my body wants to tighten up and use all my strength. I need to learn to relax. Anyway, I think you might be right about the knee action. I guess since I do a lot of breaststroke, I just assume that the farther you "chamber" your legs, the more powerful the kick will be. I'll have to work on that today. On a positive note, I got 10 more feet out of my underwater pull for breaststroke yesterday.

You mean treading water with a dolphin kick? That's a good one with arms immobilized on the chest. Keep that head still, and then do it with as little kicking motion as possible, with torso movement only. You can also practice the butterfly snap while doing that dolphin kick treading to get the jerky launching motion. If you do kick, and jump off the bottom, with fins or monofin, you could actually go airborne out of the water. Flipper, look out. Absolutely correct; arms down to the side, but we also do arms to the side, hands out of water, and hands up in streamline to give some variation to difficulty.

I think I'm doing something different when I try to do it vertically. We did a few sets today where we did 3 SDKs and then swam the rest of the 25 free. Then we did 5 SDKs and then 7 SDKs. There were a few times where I was about to come up from my SKDs and I was just about underneath the guy in front of me. Obviously, I can get myself going with dolphin kicks when I'm horizontal. I wonder what I'm doing wrong vertically.
