hello, im learning to swim and i'd like to know if i have to use hip rotation during my pulling sets on freestyle and backstroke, thank you!!

For the long axis strokes I like think of it as your shoulders acting as the fulcrum and your arms and hands act as the lever. If you don't rotate your hips you lose the power source and all your left with is the strength you have in your arms.
The most important part of a swimming stroke is the power generated from the hips and it’s torque effect that creates a sustainable power source for short swims (sp1-sp3) and greater aerobic capacity for long swims (en1-en3).
Swimming slowly or pulling is probably the best time to really experiment with the sync of the body and hands and arms and the concept of swimming inside out.
