HELP! Need some Breastroke Workout's for Meet preparation!!!

Hi all! I'm brand new here however a life long competitive swimmer (Florida ..High school and college) and now a Master's swimmer at 36 years ....young. I currently swim UNAT as there are no teams at all where I live. I am trying to start a team at the YMCA where I belong...looks promising. In the mean time I swim with a friend or on my own but need help with w workout schedule. I signed up for the UMD swim meet this August and plan to swim the 50 and 200 *** on day 1. Probably that will be it ...since it's my first meet in a long time. Can anyone please suggest a good workout plan from now until August 23rd, 2008 geared towards Breastroke????? THANK you..... Even a website link that has workout's would be appreciated! THANKS all! So excited I found this discussion board!!!
  • Bumping... ANYONE! I would love this workout by...tomorrow(Tuesday) LMK!! THANKS!
  • Welcome Swimalison! I swim breaststroke myself but have never really done a lot of breaststroke in my workouts. What I do is (a) drill breaststroke (wave action breaststroke was just coming into its own when I quit swimming, so I'm still trying to learn it), (b) kick breaststroke (almost exclusively, and I work it as hard as possible) and (c) do some limited race pace breaststroke sprints. Otherwise I'm generally swimming freestyle to build my aerobic base. I do this because I think it's very hard to maintain good technique while churning out breaststroke yardage. You can probably modify any of the workouts posted on this site to fit that plan. Good luck! Maybe somebody will have "real" workouts for you.
  • Swimalison, Have you checked here? www.delawareswimandfitnesscenter.com/ or here? www.geocities.com/.../DE_Masters.html or here? www.dvmasters.org/places_to_swim.php It looks like there are more places to swim near you than you might have thought. But if you are looking for workouts, try here: www.swimmingworldmagazine.com/.../ I have found a couple of them worth while. Paul

University of Delaware no longer has a team. I tried out team one Triathlete team once in Pike Creek (Delaware) and it was waay to crowded and not Master's anyway. Believe me, I've lived here for 6 years and callled and looked around everywhere. I'm really hoping that my local YMCA will be starting a team in the Fall. The Aquatics Director is a former Clemson swimmer and record breaker! So I'm really on his case to start a team. THANKS!!!!
  • If you want to race breaststroke, you need to swim a good amount of breaststorke. You mentioned that you will be doing the 50 and 200. Training for these two events is different. Do you have any preference as to which you really want to train for or would you just like to do a bit of training for both?

Since it's a 2 day meet and I can't really come back the second day and my chances of doing well in the breaststroke events is most promising...I'd like to train for both!!! But more so the 200...Not really worried about the 50... THANKS!! I have heard different theories though. Some say not to do too much breaststroke or you will really pull some muscles in your legs (not sure where).....Not sure how much breaststroke to be swimming while training.... I did find a local YMCA swim team coach who says he can help me with my breaststroke so that is exciting!! THANKS again!
  • I am not sure what workouts you usually do so I am somewhat limited in what to suggest.IF you have a pretty good breaststroke now I'd recommend some race pace work. For the 200 I like 100s with a goal time of your goal 2nd 100 split. The interval is what you can do and make that split and the number is how many you can do and keep good stroke mechanics(if your stroke is falling apart or your knees hurt stop and do something else.)Maybe 5X100 on the 3:00.For the 50 I recommend 25s all out.Again the interval is what you can keep and still go max sprint speed, maybe 10X25 on 1:00. Don't let your body learn how to swim slow.

But I just usually do a good 250-500 warmup. Then do some set's of 100's..but usually just free. Some with fins and some without. Today though I did 2 sets of (3) 50's. #1) *** down, Free back then #2) Free down, *** back...the #3) Breaststroke both laps.... Then usually a set of kicking. Then one more set and finally a good warm down. I don't even know how much yardage I'm swimming. (soo sad.I NEED A COACH..(chanting)hehe. I know this isn't enough prep at all for the 200 ***. The muscle in my leg (upper inside....) is killing me though! UGH!..so I guess I should skip breaststoke for a few days.. Will do a freestyle workout out Saturday! THANKS. I know it's hard to say when you don't know me!!! FYI My time for 100 Yard *** is about 1:20...give or take!!!
  • Do your muscles feel sore or hurt.If sore,I'd suggest you do some REALLY SLOW breaststroke, working on form and full range of motion. If you are hurt then no breaststroke until healed, but see if you can do breaststroke pull/dolphin kick with fins without hurting yourself. This is a really good way to work on tempo and body undulation. When you can do regular breaststroke, try doing 1:3::***:free to get the feel for your stroke without over doing. THANKS! Great advice!!! Not sore...hurts. Like I really pulled something. Feels better today but I didn't swim either (just ran!!) I better be healed here soon so I can swim *** at Zones! THANK YOU!!!!
