I just enlisted in the Navy but I want to get my swimming skills back up to high school level. I was a distance swimmer.. it was only 2 years ago but I haven't been in the water since. Any ideas? I need help with workouts!
  • My son just finished basic at the RTC in Chicago (where you will go). Good luck. You need not worry about endurance, They will only test you for competance and fear of heights (jumping off a 3 meter tower). There is an advanced rating (an additional test) which requires knowledge of the strokes. My son never competed, but was a proficient swimmer, so passed the first test easily. The second test he tried but did not pass because he did not know Breaststroke well. Ask your recruiter about the tests, he should be able to tell you what to expect. They aren't a secret.

Starfire, Michael has it right. As one who went through Navy boot camp, although it was over 25 years ago, I can tell you that if you were a distance swimmer in high school you'll do fine with any swimming test they'll throw at you while at boot camp. If your strokes are proficeint and you're in reasonable shape you'll do fine. Just take some time and get in the water a few times before you leave to wake up the old swimming muscles. • Good luck Squid. Outside of a terrible injury, you'll be just fine. I've been told they use boats anyway. Just learn to drink lots of really terrible coffee. Your fitreps will probably be running anyway.

I just enlisted in the Navy and I used to be a distance swimmer in high school too. As long as you get in a few times before you leave for basic you'll be fine. Just get a little bit of your muscle memory back and you'll leave nearly everyone at basic in your wake. Good Luck!
