Workout set definitions/acronyms

I am looking at putting together a sheet for my new masters swimmers about all the different swimming terminology and acronyms coaches use on deck. I will start with a few.... Please add as many as you can and I will re-post what I put together. DPS - Distance per stroke Rev IMO - Reverse Individual Medley Order R Arm - Right Arm only L Arm - Left Arm only Inv K - Inverted Kick Alternate Breathe - breathing pattern that consist's of equal number of breath's on the left side as the right, typically done in threes, breathe left, stroke three times, breathe right, stroke three times, repeat.

  • As Rob noted, there are a number of practice over view explanations in the workout section of this site. Those have a lot of terms defined and a lot of abbreviations defined. The most important things to remember: * use terms that fit into the teaching and workout mix you choose to provide * use words or abbreviations that help you and your swimmers read the instructions clearly and fairly quickly (versus long narratives with sentences) * as long as you use the terms fairly consistently (verbally and in writing) so your swimmers can grasp what they mean things will run smoothly have fun.
