I am looking at putting together a sheet for my new masters swimmers about all the different swimming terminology and acronyms coaches use on deck.
I will start with a few.... Please add as many as you can and I will re-post what I put together.
DPS - Distance per stroke
Rev IMO - Reverse Individual Medley Order
R Arm - Right Arm only
L Arm - Left Arm only
Inv K - Inverted Kick
Alternate Breathe - breathing pattern that consist's of equal number of breath's on the left side as the right, typically done in threes, breathe left, stroke three times, breathe right, stroke three times, repeat.
IMO--IM order
FR--Freestyle
BK--Backstroke
BR--Breastroke
Fly--Butterfly
CH--Choice
SW--Swim
NB--No Breath
D 1-4--Descend 1-4
A 1-4--Ascend 1-4 (I like these sets)
Alt.--Alternate
HD--Hard
SP--Sprint
Typically for my practices, "swim" means freestyle swim and choice is your choice of stroke other than freestyle.
You always need to get clarification on "choice": I've had it mean anything but free or anything, including free, with "stroke" meaning free-free. In warmup, I would assume it included drill and pull unless told otherwise.
(Sigh)
An acronym (lit. "short word") is a word made up of initial letter(s) of other words. There are very few acronyms in English. Here are some of the most common:
snafu: situation normal, all fouled up
scuba: self-contained underwater breathing apparatus
radar: radio detecting and ranging
I have never seen an acronym used in a swimming context, although there might be one.
There are lots of abbreviations, initialisms, and shorthand ways of writing things in swimming workouts:
SDK: an initialism
Helpful hint: if you can't pronounce it as a word, it is not an acronym.
The only acronym that I really ever use is SKIPS (Swim, Kick, IM, Pull, Swim).
Hi all,
May I know what does it mean when a workout says
"400 swim, 250 Choice..."
What's the difference?
Thanks

I agree with regard to the clarification! In warm up, I try to stay away from drills though kick and pull are fine for choice...

Some workout posted here and other places say, for instance, 75 kick/drill/swim. In this case, what does "drill" mean???
Also have a question about what "descend" and "ascend" mean in workouts.
Thanks for any help!
Drill means that you do a stroke drill instead of a swim.
Descend means that you increase your speed as you go through the set, meaning that your time should be faster than the one before it. Ascend means that you decrease your speed as you go through the set. Each repeat should be slower than the one before it.
Hope this helps.
