I am looking at putting together a sheet for my new masters swimmers about all the different swimming terminology and acronyms coaches use on deck.
I will start with a few.... Please add as many as you can and I will re-post what I put together.
DPS - Distance per stroke
Rev IMO - Reverse Individual Medley Order
R Arm - Right Arm only
L Arm - Left Arm only
Inv K - Inverted Kick
Alternate Breathe - breathing pattern that consist's of equal number of breath's on the left side as the right, typically done in threes, breathe left, stroke three times, breathe right, stroke three times, repeat.
Thanks Katie, but what are "drills" for freestyle?
You can pick a drill to work on a specific part of your stroke. I prefer the catch up drill and the fingertip drag drill. You can google some freestyle swim drills and watch the videos to find some that you like. Sometimes the workouts will specify which drills to do.
Kris Houchens says that these are her freestyle swim drills from Opportunities for Greatness.
100 Free Drill Cycle
25 – Fist Drill. Swim freestyle with hands in fists. Work on holding onto the water with the wrist and forearm. Focus on high elbow during pull phase.
2 x 25 – One Arm Drill Swim with one arm only.
1) Non–working arm can be at the side (requires more core strength) breathing to the opposite side of the arm working. Try to hold the working arm in the streamline position for 6 kicks before stroking to emphasis timing. Rotate hips, navel, and shoulders all together with arm pull. Should roll completely from one side to the other than back again during one stroke cycle.
2) Non–working arm can be in streamline position for beginners with balance problems. Breathing to the working arm side. Focus on arm strength and position of arm/hand for the catch.
25 – Full Stroke Freestyle. Thinking about good technique.
Hope this helps to get you started on doing some good drills.
