Use of fins in workouts

I'm new to this site and joined USMS last week. It's been >30 years since I last competed. I've used the site to look at sample workouts. My question is: Why do most workouts include sets using fins? I assume you could do more distance in shorter times, but not sure what the benefit is. Can anyone give me some insight?

  • Fins are supplemental equipment occasionally used within conditioning sets. I personally find fins very useful for performing stroke improving drills. They also allow swimming at race pace to help one minimize speed induced drag
