Motion Sickness during Open Water races

Hello everyone! I am looking for some tips/tricks to prevent motion sickness in choppy waters during open water races. During my last two races I took some dramamine a few hours before the race, but it didn't seem to help and I still threw up 3 times.... I have heard that Ginger extract and/or ear plugs might help. Any suggestions or similar experiences? Thanks!!!
  • Salt water or fresh? If your issue is your stomach, try ginger. Make sure it is real ginger; most ginger ales don't use real ginger. If it is your inner ear, then try aspirin. Full disclosure: These are solutions I learned about in the flying world, so unsure if it'll work in open water swimming. I've been in rough water in both fresh and salt water. Only issues I've had were in cold (12.5C) fresh water and throwing up solved that!

Thanks Mike! I get sea sick in both! Salt water during a swim in Cancun (after throwing up, I still felt sea sick) and fresh water during a swim in Canada (water was colder like you mentioned). I will take aspirin and ginger before the race and see how it goes! Thank you!
