Leland to Manitou Islands in Lake Michigan?

I'm considering swimming from Leland, MI to either North Manitou (9.8 miles) or South Manitou (16 miles). I can't find a record of anyone having ever done it. Does anyone here know definitively whether it has been done? Given the distance and water temperature, I'd like to have it count as my qualification swim for the English Channel. What's the process for getting a swim certified? Thanks in advance, Jon

I can't answer your question at all, but I wish you the best of luck. I hope you let us at the board know what you are doing. Jason Lassen recently tried to swim from Beaver Island to the mainland, but didn't make it :( I think the Manitou Island might be considered to be part of the same archipelago as Beaver.

The islands are in the same general area. Not sure about conditions, they might be somewhat different. I had heard about Jason's attempt. He tried to do the whole thing *** stroke. That's a lot of *** stroke. Hope he tries it again. Jon

When I first heard that Lassen was doing it all *** stroke, I discounted his effort - until I read that he had done Catalina all ***. I guess some breasts are better than others. :bolt:
