Taper Tips for Saturday/Big Shoulders?

Hi! Big Shoulders is only 4 days away! All swimmers who lurk/post here--see ya Saturday morning, bright 'n' early, Ohio St. Beach, Chicago! :applaud: And GOOD LUCK!! :cheerleader: All you experienced OW swimmers/racers: Do you have any tips for tapering/working out this week? I've been putting in 3,000-3200 yard workouts, with a few 2100 yarders thrown in, with a little running and bike riding on days when the pool was closed. I had a 2600 yard workout this morning. Any tips for how to plan the rest of the week? I was thinking of putting in two more swim workouts, tomorrow/Wed., 2000 yards and Friday, 1600 yards. I thought of having a short (5K-ish) run Thursday morning, and a short bike ride Wed. evening. I'll be traveling to Chicago Friday afternoon, checking into the hotel and chillling Friday night (with maybe a burger 'n' fries at Ed Dibevic's ). Too much? Not enough? Just right? Thanks!
  • HOW DO YOU TAPER FOR BIG/STATE/NATIONAL MEETS? I WOULD BACK OFF ON THUR & FRI. Are you wearing a wetsuit or jammers?
  • Unless you've got a tri planned soon after BS and don't want to lose your bike/run fitness, I'd drop the planned bike and run this week. I'm racing a 1 mile and a 3 mile swim on Sunday out west (www.ljrws.com) and have been averaging about 3,750 SCY per workout over the last 5 or so weeks. Here's what I'll do this week: Tuesday - day off Wednesday -- ~4K or so (same effort as always) Thursday -- ~4K (same effort as always) Friday -- ~3K (more rest & recovery Saturday -- Play around and swim maybe 2/3 of a mile in the ocean Sunday -- race day YMMV
  • Unless you've got a tri planned soon after BS and don't want to lose your bike/run fitness, I'd drop the planned bike and run this week. I agree. Rest the legs! Otherwise your (Andy's, that is) plan looks great. Get lots of rest and be well hydrated. See you on the beach!

    Jammers.
  • I agree with dropping the non-swim stuff, more potential for injury. Have a great swim!

Thanks, folks! I'll take your advice and just swim/taper. I had planned a 2800 yard workout for this morning before work, but a t-storm pre-empted that. No worries--tonight after work. Thanks again, and again, good luck all Big Shoulders swimmers! See ya on the beach!

Kirk: Thanks for asking. I posted a thread on this board asking how Big Shoulders went; I wasn't able to make it. Briefly: My dad had been very ill for a few months with heart disease and lung problems. He took a turn for the worse Thursday night/Friday morning (2am), so I took off in the morning from Galesburg, IL to Green Bay, WI to be there for him and my stepmom. I had the day off work anyway to go to Chicago. While I was on the way, my stepmom called and told me he had died. Even if he hadn't died, I wouldn't have been able to make it to Ohio St. beach Saturday morning. On Saturday, my stepmom, step siblings and I met with the funeral director. Sunday, my wife and son joined me. The visitation and funeral were Tuesday evening, and the interment was Wednesday morning. I'll be there next year!
  • So how did the swim go, Andy? It was an interesting year with the conditions. I swam well, but the second lap was a real obstacle course with lots of 2.5K swimmers swimming breaststroke or just treading water trying to sight. That aspect was definitely more difficult than 'normal' years.
