Good point. However driving the length of California is less than driving the length of Florida, Pensacola to Key West. I guess people all over the USA are funny with geography.
More geography fun from a CA native (and thus had to check the assertion that the Florida driver was longer): according to Google Maps, the Key West-Pensacola drive is approximately 832 miles. Driving from the southern border of CA to the northern border via Hwy 101 (basically, the semi-coastal route) is slightly longer (937 miles; route is over 1,000 miles if you take Hwy 1 wherever possible), and if you measure from the NW corner to the SE corner of CA (to mimic the long western swing to Pensacola), then you're talking about just over 1000 miles (using I-5 and Hwy 101). Of course, all this would pale to driving across/around Alaska if it had sufficient roads (Juneau to Anchorage is 850 miles, but you have to cross into Canada to make the drive).
