Any open water groups in LA area?

I'm visiting Los Angeles at the end of the month and would love to find a group to swim open water swims with. Anyone know of any groups? Thanks !:)

Tower 26 meets Wed mornings--huge group (often 200+) under the tutelage of Gerry Rodrigues. google tower 26 to find out exact location & other info. you need an associate membership to attend workouts but if you email Gerry directly he might let you attend one workout. this is prob the premiere ocean workout group in the LA area. also try latriclub which posts info on weekly workout groups. there are several all along the SAnta Monica bay.
  • You can also contact Rob Dumouchel. His blog is robaquatics.com. I'm sure he's got his contact info on it somewhere. East Coast people are funny with their California geography. Rob lives 175 miles north of LA :)

  • Good point. However driving the length of California is less than driving the length of Florida, Pensacola to Key West. I guess people all over the USA are funny with geography. More geography fun from a CA native (and thus had to check the assertion that the Florida driver was longer): according to Google Maps, the Key West-Pensacola drive is approximately 832 miles. Driving from the southern border of CA to the northern border via Hwy 101 (basically, the semi-coastal route) is slightly longer (937 miles; route is over 1,000 miles if you take Hwy 1 wherever possible), and if you measure from the NW corner to the SE corner of CA (to mimic the long western swing to Pensacola), then you're talking about just over 1000 miles (using I-5 and Hwy 101). Of course, all this would pale to driving across/around Alaska if it had sufficient roads (Juneau to Anchorage is 850 miles, but you have to cross into Canada to make the drive).
  • That's because driving the length of California is almost like driving from Georgia to New York. Problem is that you're still in the same state rather than "counties" some of those small east coast states.Good point. As mentioned previously, Gerry Rodrigues is an excellent resource for swimming and races in and around LA. His contact information and other information on open water swimming can be found at the SP-LMSC web site www.spmasterswim.org/.../

I'm part of a group that meets at the Manhattan Beach Pier Wed & Fri at 6:30, Sundays at 7:30. Generally we jog a mile to Hermosa, swim a mile back. Some go longer, some shorter. Pretty wide range of ability. Anyone is welcome to join. Also LA Tri Club has a Sunday morning swim at 8am, also meeting at Manhattan Beach Pier- free for anyone to come, you don't have to be a member.
