The 3rd Annual BaySwim... a one mile swim across Presque Isle Bay... is scheduled for Saturday, June 26, 2010, with a 9:00am start time. The inaugural BaySwim took place in 2008. What was intended to be a one-time event to celebrate the greatly improved water quality of Presque Isle Bay has become an annual event. Over 200 swimmers participated in 2009. Applications for the 2010 BaySwim are now available. BaySwim III is limited to 300 total swimmers, and the minimum age requirement is 14. A non-profit event, all BaySwim proceeds will benefit Presque Isle State Park, the Erie County Diabetes Association, and the Reyburn Sailing School.
Might be a good idea to identify the state where this swim will take place. As a recovering New Englander, I see Presque Isle and I'm thinking Northern Maine. I'm sure the Great Lakes are much warmer that time of year than The Atlantic off PI ME.

Yeppers. "Maine" here, too.
Spit of land (sand, mostly) sticking out into Lake Erie from Pennsylvania. Interstate 90 is not far. "Recurving sandspit": sand gets picked up on one side and spit gets bulgier on other side.
You are talking about colder than an icebox if you are talking about Presque Isle, Michigan on Lake Huron.
Since you brought it up, Lake Huron temps are ranging from 57.9 to 62.1, while the Atlantic off Eastport Maine is in the mid 40s.
