I'm doing the Kingdom swim again this year and hoping to find someplace to stay. I have not sense of what towns are within reasonable driving distance to Newport.
Last time we stayed at the hotel right in town and I had to get up in the middle of the night to yell at the women next door, in town for the softball tournament. I'd like to get more sleep before this year.
Any suggestions?
We're not much for B&Bs but the options seem pretty limited up there...

My husband and I would pretty much do anything not to have to make idle conversation with strangers--especially before coffee. I get enough of that owning a store.
I also like when the "host" feels like sitting and chatting, while smoking. No thank you.
The only thing that's worse is when there are cats they have not told you about--climbing over the chairs in the dining area. Yup--happened to us Lenox, Mass. Another guest and I, both with serious cat allergies, had to explain to the owners why it really wasn't okay and we would be checking out, immediately. Nice.
B&Bs care what you do, and care if you don't follow their advice on travel routes, etc. Plus, I don't care to eat breakfast too late with a bunch of strangers, or explaining to host that I need to get an early start ("But my waffles are famous!").
A cheap, adequate motel would do very nicely. I'll drop Phil a note. Thanks, Jim, for the suggestion.
clare and i stayed at a b&b last year. it was quiet but there were all these notes around the room about proper use of the towels.... and penalties for not adhering to said rules. ........ weird.

Glad you said that. The Court Without Appeal thinks that the B&B experience is the most wonderful thing ever. Being somewhat socially retarded, I can find it very painful to have to interact, especially the night before a race when I just want to have minimal stress. That, plus I always envision it as being the start of some Stephen King novel - kind of like "The Shining", but with rat poison in the homemade oatmeal cookies that they always want to give you.

There is not much within reasonable driving distance of Newport. We camped last year. The town of Newport operates a campground right at Prouty Beach.
Last year Phil had a list of places to stay that he was sending around. It would be worth asking him.

To those of you looking for an alternative to downtown Newport and don’t want to go with the B&B route, I would suggest you go West to Jay: Cedarwood Resort, Jay Village Inn, or up mountain to the new Tram Haus Lodge. They are about half an hour outside of Newport. You can find the contact information by going to our newly updated Lodging section on the web site. I am presently discussing Kingdom Swim discounts with each of these so you might want to wait a week before making contact. We also include a page on camping options. Heading east out of town are the Lake Salem Inn or Lake Seymour Lodge.

too bad i'll be in SF.... doing a double alcatraz on my way home from catalina. it was a fun event last year with a field less than 1/3 the size.
i sense an NSR thread "B&B nightmares" coming.......
I'm glad this thread started because I have not as yet planned my accomodation for Kingdom. I'll have to get on to Flipper Fill about it soon.
Most of my many B&B experiences have been wonderful. Weird and wonderful sometimes.
My most recent B&B stay was at Jim Thornton's place in Pittsburgh. It was fabulous!!!! I didn't want to leave. I forgot to sign the guestbook so will have to go again. If anyone's thinking of doing the Search for Monogamy Open Water swim in Pittsburgh this summer this would be a great place to stay. You will need a car, though.
