I noticed my name in the caption, so I figured I did or said something wrong. In a recent USMS Swimmer Magazine article, I wrote about different unique open water swims around the world - many of these events were events that many American swimmers have not yet heard about. I wrote the article under the assumption that most open water swimmers around the world have heard about the ocean swims in Australia. Ocean swims in Australia, magnificant open water swimming opportunities, have been going on for nearly a century. From short (Lorne Pier to Pub) to long (Rottnest Channel Swim), Australians host hundreds of remarkably fun, competitive and massive ocean swims. No country does it better than Australia. But I figured that most swimmers around the world already knew that, so I wrote about swims that people may not know. I did not mean to disrespect or ignore the Australian open water swimming events, it was simply a matter of informing Swimmer Magazine readers about lesser-known events.
