The five villages of Cinque Terre, Italy - from Riomaggiore to Monterroso (or vice versa). It's about a 10K, I think.
I was there a few years ago and swam from Vernazza to Monterosso (a much faster mode of travel than hiking, as it turned out). It was such a gorgeous swim that I decided, if I ever returned, I'd do the whole thing.
If it could be considered "overseas"... the Na Pali Coast of Kauai (~16 miles) would be another tremendous swim -- in the summer months, at least (gets pretty wild in winter). It's quite commonly kayaked, but I haven't heard of anyone swimming it.
I've seen on one of the swim-cation sites a swim that goes across a number of lakes in Bavaria. I keep picturing this beer at the end of every swim and I get tingly all over.

Haha Dave I was thinking the same thing. I think Steve might have a sense of humour including New Zealand but not Oz :)

I maintained the article's destinations...
plentiful australia swims - too many to reference a destination i guess?
pub jumping in ireland could model a bavaria swim. too.. out for a pint and a cup of clam chowder

OMG Cinque Terra is beautiful! I visited a long time ago but didn't swim.
I've done some overseas swims--Fiji, Bermuda, Acapulco. The best I've done was the Fiji swim.
I'd have to go with Australia for the dream destination though for open water swimming--although the Bosporus Swim in Istanbul is catching my attention and imagination....

every 'port of call' would be a fantastic experience...
south africa is the current leading vote getter... they have some events that capture the imagination, but Cape Town and the Western Province make our pacific waters seem postively tropical!

Certainly Australia.
How about Iceland(Sounds cold, I know) but it's one of the coolest places on Earth and although they are not known for their beer, they have plenty of it.
Not to mention that with their economic collapse, getting there and staying there is a lot cheaper than it used to be.
Iceland also has a Marathon and a few diving adventure if swimming there isn't enough.
