Governor's Island Swim 8-1-10

I signed up to swim the Governor's Island swim in NYC this summer. Has anybody done it? Anybody planning on it this year? I am trying to ease myself into more open water swimming and this seemed like a good one and interesting (although getting there early in the morning might be rough). I am open to suggestions of other moderately difficult northeast swims this summer -- they have to be on Sundays though, for a variety of reasons.

there is some truth to that...... but with discomfort comes endorphins! So long as you're not suffering from hypothermia

governor's island is a fantastic swim but the tide can rip around portions of the island. I completed the swim several years ago... counterclockwise beginning proximate to the northernmost point of the island - swimming along the westside of governor's you'll see liberty island with the statue of liberty on your right... as you proceed around the southern point you'll see the brooklyn bridge over the east river more quickly than you anticipate. as you continue up the eastside, you'll begin to anticipate the manhattan skyline... and it too will appear more quickly than you'll anticipate. you'll love this swim... prepare hard and good luck

hola chaos - looks like you had a great 2009 AND a super 2010 scheduled... best of luck in MIMS I was lucky enough to become a first-time dad on the Monday following the Highland Lakes Challenge - so I couldn't pull off the 5-lakes race. I have several NYCSwims planned... I'll keep you posted. cheers
  • Josh - To get the topic back to your original post: I plan on doing the Governors Island swim in August. I'm a triathlete and in training for Ironman Arizona. Although I live in Boise, Idaho, I'll be back in NJ/NY visiting family when the swim is happening. I'm really looking forward to it. (I am waiting to sign up until my wife gets her 2-mile pool swim (ugh)) certified. We both plan on doing it. John
