I signed up to swim the Governor's Island swim in NYC this summer. Has anybody done it? Anybody planning on it this year? I am trying to ease myself into more open water swimming and this seemed like a good one and interesting (although getting there early in the morning might be rough).
I am open to suggestions of other moderately difficult northeast swims this summer -- they have to be on Sundays though, for a variety of reasons.

check out www.cibbows.org
there may be a 10k happening in huntington bay as well
The governor's island swim(which is a very nice one)is part of the manhattan swim series. they have several other races, including a brooklyn bridge swim, around liberty island and some others. they are well organized and are a very friendly and hospitable bunch. someone mentioned the coney island swims--there is a grimaldi(sp?) mile in late june, and two aquarium swims later in the year. the latter have a one mile and a 5k option. I don't know the other swims as well except that Boston area and greenwich have some races also--I've done the Hopkington Lake swim in Boston and the Boston Light swim--its a pretty full calendar if you dig around a bit. Vermont has some races, and there are some races up towards Lake Placid if I remember correctly. Check www.thewaterisopen.com/10kswimmer for race calendars along with the local USMS groups and the Active.com calendar.
Good luck.

I did the 5K Aquarium swim while visiting my sister on the East Coast this year. It was well run and the people were fantastic. However I must caution you that there was a wicked current running parallel to the shore. A good number of swimmers did not finish and it added a good 30+ minutes to my swim. This was my most challenging swim of the year and not one I would recommend to a novice. The 1 mile swim was run under identical conditions and I imagine was equally challenging.
