The Triple Crown

I saw Chaos post in the other forum about swimming that in 2010. Has anyone here done all three (not necessarily in the same year)? In my slow, but steady immersion in to open water swimming, I have considered targeting one of these three in the next five years or so. For some reason, the Manhattan swim intrigues me the most. Any thoughts?

Who do you think should be considered the pre-race favorite(s)? of those entered that i have had the pleasure to swim with.... Rondi and Lynne stand out.... though there are many impressive marathon times included in the resumes. its going to be a fun one to watch (too bad i'll be in the water)

I checked this years entry for the MIMS for the women, (know the most about) and I believe all but one maybe two have swam the English Channel. They did a very nice job of spreading the entrys by ages, regions, etc. Hoosier, I believe you are referring to me. Beware of the Underdog, or Chicken in my case. I'm relentless.

I was making no comment as to who would win, simply following the discussion as to what it took to get the opportunity to swim....good luck to you in your swim. :) as we always say, 'watch out for outside smoke!"

Just a quick question about goggles for anyone who swam long distance in open water (such as Channel swimming): did you have to adjust your goggles from time to time? It's hard for me to imagine having goggles sucked to your eye sockets for more than 10 hours. My goggles would leak after even a few laps in the pool. Even if it doesn't leak, I like to loosen it when I'm not swimming.
  • One of the very important practice elements of open water swimmers is to not take off your goggles during pool swimming practice. While nearly 100% of pool swimmers regularly place their goggles lenses on their forehead in between sets during pool workouts, this is not a practice that is recommended for established/experienced marathon swimmers who learn to adjust their goggles by facial movement in the pool and open water. By constantly adjusting your goggles during pool workouts, you tend not to learn how to adjust your goggles "on the fly" which will take time, assuming you are wearing goggle that fit well in the first place. Good luck.

Thank you very much Munatones, chaos, for the information and tips. Sounds like swimming can also help develop facial muscles :D

good advice steve. the goggles i use in OW are different than the goggles i use in the pool. for me, long lasting comfort means that my goggles are as loose as they can be without leaking. this will vary with conditions (wind, chop, etc) but, my tightest OW adjustment and goggle choice will still leak in the pool when i push off the wall. for OW, i like blue 70 vision
