Tech suits in open water events going forward

It seems that FINA has not banned tech suits in open water swimming. It also seems that USMS has banned tech suits for their events following USA-S actions. So, does that mean that tech suits are banned from USMS sanctioned open water events or just pool events? Still confused.
  • Okay, why would you want to wear a tech suit for an open water event? If we are speaking of the textile ones they seem to become waterlogged quickly and they all chafe a lot. I suppose a 1 k maybe but somehow the advantages of a tech suit in open water seem to just wash away. Maybe I just go too long so I miss the point? For several reasons. I bought one for two reasons for the Swim Around Key West Race this past June and neither had to do with speed. First, I wanted more protection from the sun than just sunscreen. Second, I wanted protection from jellyfish and stinging cells floating in the water. A floating loose jellyfish tentical is just as dangerous as one connected to a jellyfish.

A floating loose jellyfish tentical is just as dangerous as one connected to a jellyfish. And a floating tenticle in your suit is worse yet or so I've found so I'm still confused. The suits might provide some sun protection but not very much I think they are spf 6 or less. I suppose the newer tech suits are like mini-wetsuits but then why not wear a wet suit if you are cold? I don't wear thos eeither so I guess I don't have the correct experience. I have lots and lots of jelly stings though!

Still confused. This statement is completely FALSE. Rather than take a trip down memory lane, I would suggest that you go to General Swimming Related Discussions on this forum and read threads such as: Shoulder to Knee? USMS Rules Committee proposed suit restrictions What should USMS do about the suits. It was published by 3 swim network sources that the tech suits were in for Open Water Swimming but I was informed at the convention last weekend that decision could be wrong so I have a wait and see attitude. The FINA Masters Technical Committee is meeting today and this weekend and a decision about tech suits in masters swimming worldwide will be forthcoming.

My Nero kept me warmer in my 5k at Big Shoulders than a conventional suit would. (long legs) To prevent chafing I put body glide around the arm holes and neck, other than that it does not rub. :applaud:

I wore the blue seventy nero 10k for big shoulders. This is low down on the suits, spent my hours reading about both wet suits and swim skins. Swim skins have not been as of yet band in open water swimming. Most pool events yes they have but mostly in the college meets. Older nylon swim skins can take on water only if you don't care for them the right way. They have a chemical coating and heat searing process on the out side. If washed with detregent it strips that and will make it take on more water and not dry as fast. This is why care is important, bad fit not tight enough can make more water come between you and the suit, hence more drage The new swim skins are still nylon but have a rubber coating on the out side. So they do not fill with water and do not make you float better like a wet suit. Wet suits are made of neopren that will float in the water. Swim skins dont float so there is no advantage except lower drag then a normal suit. So you glide through the water faster. but if your a slow swimmer you will still be slow with it. Un like a wet suit that will make you float so you can swim faster and in that way are diffrent the swim skins. The blue seventy nero, because of the runbber coating keeps you some what warmer with out using a wet suit and being put in a diffrent class. Also protects you from scraps in the water from people or stuff in the water. If you swim alot of ocean swim it helps to protect your skin form sea salt and coral scraps. I have both old nylon tyr tech suit and nero 10k. Love the nero 10k cause it was built for open water swiming very comfortable so guess it comes down to preferance.
