Wasn't exactly thrilled to see the news about the Great Whites tagged off Chatham this past week given the Ptown Swim4Life this coming Saturday! Although they haven't cancelled it, so I guess I just have to swim faster than the guy next to me?!?!!? :bolt: www.cnn.com/.../index.html .
  • Just think of the news that you will make if the shark does bite you!!

Those sharks were spotted something like 25 miles south of ptown. Unless you are swimming with the seals, I do not think you have much to worry about.

Jim B. was right: happy to report no shark sightings! Although there was also no sun which made for a fairly chilly swim (64 degree water temp), and LOTS of stingerless jellies - it was like swimming through jello. Eww. But a wonderful event as always. And I managed to miss qualifying for the Chesapeake 4.4 mile by a whopping 5 seconds. Grrrr...:dunno:

Actually I saw one between N.Truro and P-town while kayaking on Sunday (9/13/09). The black fin was sticking out 8-10" above water just 30 feet in front to the right to my boat. I saw light grey body few inches under water, but not the hole fish - the sun was low, around 5 pm. You understand I did not want to get closer. I also saw pretty big splash in the same area a few days before just 200-300 feet away. I was late to spot who did it, but my wife saw it and thought it was small whale. It definitely was not, never surfaced again. But I did not argued otherwise she will never sit in kayak ever.

That is discouraging. I love swimming from Coast Guard Beach to the inlet at Nauset Marsh and back when I am down there. I was hoping the sharks were sticking around Monomoy Is. I guess I need to accept that they are going to be wherever the seals are. The seals seem like they are everywhere. I have been considering a kayak supported swim between Coast Guard and Marconi beaches next summer. Anybody else ever tried that? Are those waters too shark infested for a swim like that?
