OW and getting sick....

OK all jokes about growing an extra limb or coming out cooked. Will I have to worry about the water in the Hudson north of the Tappan Zee Bridge? Do any OW swimmer take any meds to prevent any sicknesses. I don't plan to drink the water...
  • Hey, I said I didn't like it...not that I wouldn't walk on it. It feels like snots...yuck. Jeez I go from barely swimming a 100 FR to doing OW inside a year and you're inferring I'm high maintenance... :D You don't have a pet puppy in a purse yet....do you? We may have to have an intervention at Zones! Swimmy:rofl:
  • OK..I can hack it sarge... hehe Oddly that was the hardest part of doing the mile in the briny the other week...the taste of salt...I'm just going to try not to disturb the river bed. I just thought of the river bed... I hate the feeling of silt between my toes..brrrrr...I hope it's rocky.... Who are your? Paris Hilton? Be tough! I think you will survive touching a little silt between your delicate little toes......:drown:

I don't know the area you mentioned, but I had a bad lake swim. It was a high use lake and the smell/taste of fuel oil gave me dry heaves. I now stick to large bodies of water (Gulf of Mexico or Atlantic Ocean). As to taking meds, never had to. You're going to drink a little, can't be helped, you get used to it--even salt water.

I don't do open water races. so I've never swum in the Hudson myself. But I know several people who have without problems (even downstream by Manhattan). The Hudson has really been cleaned up very well, especially north of the Tappan Zee. The New York State Parks Department is even planning to open swimming areas near there. (I'm told that there are some tricky and strong currents in the Hudson, though.) :fish2:

  • Hi Swimmy - Am still around occasionally - have been too busy taking care of my wife (neurological problem) and my mother (senility) to swim much or have much time here. Sigh... Other than the jellyfish sting from H@ll last year (in the East River and I was numb for almost 2 hours after) and then getting violently, deathly ill for three days after MIMs, I've just had the usual assortment of open water perils. The only really odd one was the time at the Swim For Life in Chestertown, MD when I got my hand caught/sliced up in an abandoned crab trap during the 5 mile. I also got a fishhook in my foot during the Lehigh River Swim. My worst open water injury occured on dry land BEFORE my first race when a woman dropped a park picnic table on my foot and broke a toe. Stud just has to remember the open water swimmer's creed: If you can't see it, it can't hurt you. Hope you are well, LBJ Leonard, Great to hear from you. Maybe we will see each other at a race someday again. Sorry to hear about life things that interfere with your swimming. Hang in there. I have not had any wildlife encounters this year so far. Happy laps! Swimmy :cheerleader:
