I wanted to start training for a 3 mile swim across the Hudson for MS in September. i have never done anything like this before. I thought this would be a great goal to work towards and it is for a good cause. Could you share any advice on training? I was thinking of finding a shorter open water swim. Does anyone know of any on Long Island? I did join a swim group and so far that is great! It has helped strengthen my skills. Thank you!!!!

Howdy - I'm new to the site, and I love reading all the useful tips and comments. I was relieved to hear NYswimmer say that the Hudson is fairly clean. My concern for the gentleman going for his first 3 miler, was not the actual race distance, but how dirty the water might be. When I was about 12, my family was boating in the river w/ friends. We actually capsized the boat, and thank goodness I knew how to swim. :drown: We had to climb on top of the boat to wait for assistance. Well - Best of luck on your 3 mile adventure. My tips: Practice sighting. Navigation is key. Find your breathing rhythm straight away. I'm off to Waikiki next week for the Rough Water event. :applaud:
