Sachuest Beach Open Water Swims

I'm starting this thread as a way for people to check if there is going to be an open water swim at second beach in Middletown RI, any given day. We do these swims from June 15 to November 15, usually on Tues and Thurs. We also sometimes do an early morning swim on the weekend, from 1st beach to 2nd beach, around Easton's Point, about 1.9 miles. Starting in June I'll be posting the plans and the reports. I usually send out emails, but this won't require an email list, and anyone who is interested will be able to check. Who knows, maybe others who swim at 2nd beach and have access will chime in and organize their own swim dates using the forum! Aloha Mike.
  • Onne and I thoroughly enjoyed a fine swim at second beach Friday evening. The sun is getting lower but the temp was still tolerable in the water. Showers were still on. Lori, Matt and I swam the western shore of Narragansett bay near her home on Saturday morning. two miles. great workout. I'm hoping to get in one a week until I can't stand it any more. looking for volunteers to join me. Wednesday and Friday look good for me. Anyone else? email me at mikegarr@usms.org Ciao
  • Bill Geasey and I thoroughly enjoyed a nifty foggy affair of waves, splashes, etc. today at 5PM. Water temps still fine. Lovely Colleen Geasey acted as our beacon, to keep us close enough to shore to stay within sight. We could see her; she says she couldn't see us. Water temps were still high sixties; no wetsuits yeah I love that global warming. Contact me join us into November.... M

M mike, its nice to know that there are other ow enthusiasts pushing the season to thanksgiving! h2o temp is still in the mid 60's in my favorite lake and i am happy to say that we have been getting 2-3 sessions a week in. the cibbows has about 20 swimmers that will continue their weekly swims until the the water drops below 60.
  • I admire Dave's group of intrepid 20 cibbows for doing it in the lake. Sachuest was beautiful today for Onne and me. We enjoyed 20 minutes in a purplish ocean with a good breeze out of the East. Water still fairly warm. Lack of participation didn't bother us. TWO IS A QUORUM. On with October swims.... Thanks Onne. Friday next. Ciao
  • Onne broadcast at 3PM today, via email. How about a swim says he. The email list - silent. I celled the fellow 430PM. DOABLE. BEAUTIFUL. Water clear cold. Light winds, low suns (it is after all October) As bill G would say best swim ever. I continue to meet my goal of at least one swim per week in the beautiful ocean. Showers are still on. How refreshing. Bring your wetsuit and enjoy the treat which is late season ocean swimming. Right on Onne. Let's keep it coming. Jim Parham will get us going next week. Where is everyone else? ...........
  • one hundred and six days left before we can reasonably be expected to do our next swim. If you can wait that long, and think you'd like to be a part of the group in 2008: We swim Tues Wed Thurs Friday 445PM meeting at the main lifeguard chair at second beach, Middletown, RI. We swim somewhere between 1500 and 2000 yards in the ocean, staying together for the most part. We accept any swimmer who is willing to give it a try. I get rid of the wetsuit after May30th and stay wetsuit-free into October. The beach sets up with a southerly breeze to trap warm water and we enjoy temps in the 70s by mid June. There is no fresh water outfall into this stretch of ocean, so it stays clean (barring major oil spills offshore). I maintain an email list which we use to determine if there is going to be a quorum on a given day (2 or more swimmers). It's a beautiful spot. If you want to try it or live vicariously through our reports I'll put you on the email list. MikeGarr@usms.org

That sounds great. I know I am going to be in Newport either in July or August for a week and would love to participate in one of the swims. Since it sounds like end of July is a definite, I will try and schedule for then.
  • The Spring ocean warming has begun. Since the beginning of March we've gained 4 degrees C in the Bay and 1.5 degrees C offshore. We still need about another 10 degrees C, but it's a start. Patience patience patience
  • I don't get it. I'm in the Ocean State, and the University of Rhode Island decides to cut the men's swimming program the year my son sets two high school swimming records, and is getting ready to be offered a chance to help the men's team. Can anyone explain this? It's my understanding that it's not alot of money that will be saved. It's not like they are closing the pool, or even discontinuing women's swimming. I'll let you know the Governor's address as soon as I calm down. President Carothers is obviously misguided..... This fight is not over.
