The IOC has just announced that the men's and women's 10k open water races have been added to the program for the 2008 Olympic Games in Beijing.
This is a great time to create open water events that are dual sanctioned with USMS and USA Swimming.
Hi Mark;
I saw that news today and was happy because its a big step for Open Water swimming. However at the same meeting I was sad to hear that the IOC defeated adding the 50's of strokes to the Olympics like they have in the World Championships. They should follow Masters example and do this. Well win some lose some.
Anyone have any idea what the qualifying requirements are going to be to get the 10k event in 2008? I haven't seen anything about it yet and I'm curious. I know some good open water swimmers who live in small countries. :)
I would assume the Olympic qualifying requirements will be tied to placement at FINA championship events plus placement at national championship event.
