No sandbagging: It's the law

The anti-sandbag law: "if a swimmer enters an event with a time significantly slower or faster than that swimmer's recorded time in the past two years, the meet director may, after a discussion with the swimmer, change the seeded time to a realistic time" (104.5.5.A(10)). Concerning my Auburn nationals entry, I confess, when faced with a 7 hour 2 stop flight and 3:45 nonstop at an earlier time, I did what any warm-blooded middle-aged American swimmer with low self-esteem would do--sandbag my entry so I could catch the earlier flight, thus diminishing the possible time spent sitting next to a 400 pound Alabama slammer with sleep apnea wearing nothing but overalls and body odor. Of course, I was caught in my bold fabrication and my time was "fixed." USMS seems to have an identity problem. Are we hard core with rigid qualifying times? It would seem not as 2 of my not-so-speedy family members were allowed to swim four events last year in Puerto Rico. If we are not hard core, why does anybody care that I sandbag? More to the point, why can one person enter a crappy time and another cannot? Just wondering.:)

No, you clearly don't get it. Too busy tooting your own horn, I guess. But I'll tell you what's really insidious and counter to the USMS mission -- your position that "all that matters is top ten" and your precious top ten streak. That's more tiresome than the morality police. I can hardly believe this thread is still going on ... Like chowmi, I will be sandbagging all future sandbaggging threads. Fort, Don't waste your time with him. Afterall, the only thing that matters in his opinion is "how long is your top ten streak? oh, not as long as mine, your opinions on usms are worthy of my time"
  • I think we could add a few more personal conflicts here to really get it to take off. Any ideas? lol Your mother was a hamster and your father smelt of elderberries! Now go away or I shall taunt you a second time! YouTube - ‪The 100 Greatest Movie Insults of All Time‬‏

Few things annoy me more than continually hearing about how wonderful somebody feels they are.

John: Even though you have more than three thousand posts here, I feel like I know nothing about you. Can you share some of your USMS history, like where you swim, who you swim with, how often you go to meets, Top Ten swims, National Records, World records ? I don't really see what my swimming background, team affiliation, meet attendance habits or number of top ten swims has to to do with this. My comment was in general, not just with respect to swimming. I'm not asking you to stop advertising your swimming success, just letting you know it is annoying.

The amusement level in this thread is directly proportional to the page number you're on... :chug: I think we could add a few more personal conflicts here to really get it to take off. Any ideas? lol
  • I was wondering the same thing. I just entered my first meet in 15 years. I know I'm not as fast as my HS times, so I had no idea what to put when signing up for the meet. So, I called the meet director and she assisted me in "guessing" some times, based on what I have been doing at pratice over the last month. We shall see how it turns out. I just hope i'm at least close to my estimated times. I didn't know there was such a thing as NT though. I guess I could have put that, oh well. Calling up the meet director was a good idea. You're doing it right! :bliss:

so what does one do if entering a meet for the first time in say 17 years? A NT is not realistic but a "guess" is going to upset someone. I will either be a sandbagger or a glory days swimmer.
