would be interested in hearing theories on why masters national records have been broken without the fast suits but world-class swimmers have not. i always thought the fast suits helped us more than them

Elite swimmers are often at the pinnacle of their potential, and therefore the time standards are rock solid and very hard to lower. The same holds true for masters, but as Jeff pointed out, in masters it may not be the tech suits as much as it is the opportunity to "age up". New age groups are the areas which most commonly have "softer" time thresholds. And as some of the elite masters pave the way in their respective age groups ie. Jeff and Rich, and Rowdy...et all...the records won't be so easily broken.
  • hey pat, here's a few comments on your comments Both of these statements can be and, IMHO, are simultaneously true . . . , They are ... but, I think Jeff's comment is spot on: it is, Jim Wrote about it in this SFF comment the nocebo effect or reverse placebo effect Ande is spot on ... thanks, I've done it. others have too. it isn't easy. but it's possible. I hope I can keep improving. I tend to change focus events. 2008 was speed and strength 2009 & 10 was longer stuff 2011 was longer stuff but coming around back to speed and strength ... and I hope to prove it to myself because, if I want to break any of the tough 45-49 National records when I age up next year, I'll need to swim faster faster! Good Luck with your record breaking quest.
