would be interested in hearing theories on why masters national records have been broken without the fast suits but world-class swimmers have not. i always thought the fast suits helped us more than them

Elite swimmers are often at the pinnacle of their potential, and therefore the time standards are rock solid and very hard to lower.
The same holds true for masters, but as Jeff pointed out, in masters it may not be the tech suits as much as it is the opportunity to "age up".
New age groups are the areas which most commonly have "softer" time thresholds. And as some of the elite masters pave the way in their respective age groups ie. Jeff and Rich, and Rowdy...et all...the records won't be so easily broken.
