would be interested in hearing theories on why masters national records have been broken without the fast suits but world-class swimmers have not. i always thought the fast suits helped us more than them

This is not 100% true, but in general the fastest swimmers in the world at age 20 would be the fastest 50 year old swimmers in the world when the reach that age if they continued to train. And because the records are not being set by the former world record holders they are not as "fast" as they potentially could be.
Or as Kirk put it, because the records are easier to break.
