One other question...why do they "invite" slower swimmers to swim events at NCAAs? Is it because they are already swimming another event they qualified for? I noticed the 50 FR has people that have gone a 20+ when there were over 40 that were under 20 on the "uncut" list...

If a swimmer makes an "A" cut in one event and "B" cuts in their other events, then the swimmer is allowed to swim their "B" events, if they want too.
Is this going to be streamed live anywhere?
I can't find anything for tonight's finals, or any of the prelims, but it looks like ESPN3 is streaming both Friday and Saturday's finals. Found that on www.ncaa.com/.../d1 (Scroll down and look under "Championship Central") Also confimed it on espn3.com, click "Upcoming."
I'm not so much looking for fair...just hate to see 25% of the top swimmers not swim a event...specially the 50 where the top times are separated by hundredths of a second.
I suspect it is related to money (isn't everything?). Does the school or NCAA foot the bill for travel/accommodations if you qualify for the meet? If the NCAA reimburses the host school for the cost of running the championships that could play a factor as well. In these instances, they're obviously going to want fewer athletes to attend the meet.
On another note, I think it's ridiculous that significantly more girls are allowed at their meet. But this is common across the board at high level meets. Interestingly enough, USA-S nationals sometimes allows qualifiers to swim bonus events as well, when they might otherwise not be the next fastest person.
Very impressive breaststroke split by Tyler. The NCAA record of 58.06 and the American/US Open record of 57.77 could go down tomorrow.
She's Canadian so it would just be the US Open record.
This is really shaping up to be a great meet! Check out the scores after tonight:
1. Cal Berkeley 295 2. Georgia 274.5
3. Southern Cali 253 4. Stanford 192
