Pat,
I feel your pain. I never swam in an Olympic Trials meet.
In 1984, I didn't go to trials but made OT cuts about month after the meet in the 50 fr, 100 fr & 100 fl.
I watched the 1988 trials in Austin but wasn't training much at the time.
From the fall of 1990 to the summer of 1992 I attempted to make the
1992 50 free trials cuts. The cut was 23.49 and my best swim was 23.65.
So I missed it by 16 hundredths, but I had a blast training.
Oh well.

Same pain here! In 1988 I made the OT cut in the mile a week or two late at a meet where I beat Artur Wojdat (400 WR at the time!). My time from that meet would have put me 16th at trials. In 1992 the cut in the 400 was 3:58 and I went 3:58 missing it by like a tenth! I retired from swimming in 1993 until Masters in 2008.
These days I see seniors or post-grads who are close to cuts keep training with the college team or with club teams, to give it another shot. I don't recall ever having that opportunity- with either the college team, a masters team or club team. When we graduated, that was it. I'm not sure if that was by design be the coach (i.e "get out in the real world and make a living- get your life started"), or if I just wanted all of those years of competitive swimming to be done.
Yep, our era didn't have nearly the number of post college opportunites to keep swimming as they do today. Although with the economy the way it is I'm sure its harder than it was 4 years ago. Just goes to show how far the sport has come and how much more mainstream it is.
I wasn't as close to OT cuts as some here. I was reasonably close in the 50 and 100 free but severed my tricept tendon in 1991. I was out for 2 months for the injury but managed to swim the identical time as the year before in the 50 at conference championships in the spring of 1992. It would have been a lot of work and waiting just to make 1996 cuts, and that certainly wasn't guaranteed, either.

NEWS: Swimming expands role for Trials (Omaha World-Herald Jan. 24 2011)
From the article:
Some Qwest Center Omaha dates for 2012: May 23, pool installation begins; June 8 to 10, Mutual of Omaha Swimvitational; June 22, pool first open to U.S. Trials swimmers; June 25 to July 2, U.S. Trials (heats at 10 a.m., finals at 7 p.m.); July 5 to 8, U.S. Masters Summer Nationals; July 8 to 14, pools removed.
Just curious: what will be the dimensions (lanes X meters) of the warm-up pool?

There will be eight 50m lanes plus five 25m lanes. Each lane will be 2.5 meters wide. The layout is such that there are 13 lanes side by side in one pool - five of them stop at 25m while 8 of them are 50m long.

Thanks Jeff! :agree: (I'm asking purely for Masters Nationals visualization, as opposed to...)
I was about 1.3 off the 50 free cut a few years ago, when I did my training in a lake. I think I can get closer, but it's a bit of a long shot.
:cheerleader:G0:ohyeah:JAzZ:ohyeah:GO! :cheerleader:
never made the cut! I think that I was 7.5 seconds off or so when the 200 LCM fly cut was 2:05 in the 90s! I would have never gotten the yards OT cut. I need more water, not walls!
