I wasn't as close to OT cuts as some here. I was reasonably close in the 50 and 100 free but severed my tricept tendon in 1991. I was out for 2 months for the injury but managed to swim the identical time as the year before in the 50 at conference championships in the spring of 1992. It would have been a lot of work and waiting just to make 1996 cuts, and that certainly wasn't guaranteed, either.
These days I see seniors or post-grads who are close to cuts keep training with the college team or with club teams, to give it another shot. I don't recall ever having that opportunity- with either the college team, a masters team or club team. When we graduated, that was it. I'm not sure if that was by design be the coach (i.e "get out in the real world and make a living- get your life started"), or if I just wanted all of those years of competitive swimming to be done.
