Before the relay it looked like the Aussies were the team to beat.Put Grevers on the relay and you are assured of a 47.5,a safe call, but it wouldn't beat what the Aussies "should" have done.Put Lochte in and it is a roll of the dice.I expected him to swim faster, everyone expected him to swim faster. It was a gamble that didn't pay off,but our guys swam great, the French swam better, and wouldn't you hate to be the Aussies?
Hey, did anybody notice how well Cullen Jones did in the free relay? I just looked at his split- awesome! :applaud: Yeah, I know they didn't get the gold, but he sure pulled his weight with a fantastic swim! :cheerleader:
what a shock in the Men's 4 x 100 relay?
Australia looked great coming in.
Brazil didn't swim Cielo in the morning and missed finals, ouch
Are there any websites out there doing the math and breaking down the splits?
ie when you go to:
Men's 4x100m Freestyle Relay
It just shows:

I'd really like to see the splits and not have to calculate them.
I'd also like to see exchange data on relays.
Yannick 22.14 24.60
Lochte 22.39 25.35
I'm in the "Lochte didn't earn the anchor spot in the finals" camp, but if Grevers or Lezak swam in his stead and we still lost, how many people would have been posting "If only they put Lochte in that relay, the USA would have won for sures!"
I would have liked then to have gone with Lezak. He's obviously proven he knows how to come through in exactly this situation and having that experience might have been a difference-maker.
I suspect that a big factor in having Lochte anchor the relay was that overall sense of Destiny - the "this is Lochte's time" vibe - pervading the atmosphere; the sense is that he is especially keyed up to win, that has has worked superhumanly hard leading up to this, and that he will make some sort of magic during these Olympics. Since it didn't happen in the relay, it may sound silly looking back; but I'm not saying that it's necessarily wrong for coaches to get caught up in that. It's not all about who's best on paper, who had the best splits, and pure rational calculation like that. Sometimes, it might be right to go with that kind of vibe, even when the "real world" evidence suggests otherwise. Who knows - the other three on the relay may also have been feeling that Lochte-destiny-vibe and may have taken some kind of strength and inspiration from knowing he was anchoring them - and so they may have swam better than they would have otherwise as a result. Who's to say? We'll probably never know exactly how and why the decision was made - the coaches themselves might not fully know. But in some way, going with Lochte made "sense."
From the other side of things, Agnel must feel !great! knowing that he entered the water trailing "the best swimmer in the world" and came out ahead to win it for his team. Not quite a Lezak moment, but still, quite a moment indeed.

I was worried when I saw that she barely made it through the 200 free semis, but I guess she was saving energy for the 100 back final.
