  • I think Lochte only gets the spot if Phelps concedes it and I think it's possible.

Relays are a combination of ability and team voodoo. Always have been, Lezaks leg 4 years ago was an outstanding example, but you see at every level from local to international- magic happens. Stories on the sports websites suggest that Lochte swimming his 200 meter semi before meant that he was tired and that coaches perhaps made a bad decision, but hey- Agnel was in the 200 free semi after Lochte and we know what happened- his coaches showed genius? No, they made their decision based upon their best judgement, just as the American coaches did. A great, entertaining race ensued- nuff said.

So who gets to swim the men's 400 free relay tonight? Presumably Jones and Adrian are locks due to being 1-2 at Trials. Grevers had a great prelim split, but the relay will be only 30 minutes after his 100 back semi. Still, I think he earned it based on his prelim swim. That leaves a decision between Phelps and Lochte. I think we'll end up seeing Phelps get the nod and have a relay order something like Phelps, Grevers, Jones, Adrian. Put Lochte and Phelps in a room and tell them, "one of you is not swimming tonight. Work it out between the two of you." Lochte is going to get the nod and he is only going to split a 47.7 Phelps looked horrible in the 400IM, but he looked horrible in the 400IM last year too and lead off in a 48.0

  • The first 100 backstroke semifinal was scheduled to start at 20:28 and the 4x100m free relay was scheduled for 21:00. Grevers was in the second semifinal so he would have had less than 30 minutes to recover. It should be noted that Grevers only had about 40 minutes in between his prelim swims, so it's not like this is out of the blue. It's also likely he was not going all out in the prelims or semis of the back, but I guess we'll find out soon enough! Oh and .2 turns into .3 or .4 because he wouldn't have had a safe start at night. More importantly, Lochte simply didn't earn the spot based on any 100 free he has done in the last year.
  • More importantly, Lochte simply didn't earn the spot based on any 100 free he has done in the last year. To me this is the crux of the matter. Grevers earned a spot at night by swimming fast in the morning. Lochte swam a 58.91 in semis at Trials and then scratched finals. Five swimmers at Trials were faster: Adrian, Jones, Feigen, Berens and Lezak (a sixth, Scot Robison tied Lochte). Yes, we all knew Lochte would be faster than that, but how much? The great thing about swimming is the clock is the final arbiter. Ultimately the coaching staff has to decide who the fastest four swimmers are, but it sure makes it difficult when guys don't swim the event (or scratch finals) at Trials.
  • Hooray for Brendan Hansen by the way. Walks away from his career with a medal and a victory over his old nemesis! I liked it when he said it'll be the shiniest bronze medal you've ever seen. That was awesome! :applaud: :cheerleader: What a great guy, too.
  • Phelps looked O K with the results. It will bring phelps up & Lochte down a bit , so look for them to have good results from here on out I don't know. After getting spanked by Agnel in the relay I don't see how Lochte beats him in the 200 free. I would be shocked to see Lochte win the 200 free and he might have trouble even making the podium. Park and Sun are both going to be difficult to beat.
