Canadian Masters Swimming Championships 2011

The next Canadian Masters Swimming Championships will be held 5/20/2011 to 5/23/2011 in Montreal. I believe it will be SCM. Unfortunately the Masters Swimming Canada site has very little information on the meet as yet. I would like to correspond with someone who knows more details, including venue, which events are on which dates, event order, etc. Any ideas? Thanks!

Yes, it will be a properly sanctioned meet, everything to spec, results submitted to FINA (and, I'm sure, to USMS). There will be - for sure - many World Top Ten swims and likely many World Records. And Montreal is a fantastic city to visit!

Le Corbeau may need to make a trip to Montreal.
  • The meet package is now available at www.cmsc2011.ca/cmsc2011.pdf (English starts on page 9). Thanks very much!
  • I have heard that sometimes they don't measure and, if they don't, our times wouldn't count for USMS purposes. I am going to confirm in advance with the meet director that they will measure the pool and sign this form: www.usms.org/.../gto_rectab_pool_measurement.pdf. I don't want to travel and not have my times count! As long as it is a sanctioned event by a FINA organization, your times will "count" internationally. However, if you want your times to be considered for USMS Top Ten and/or records, you'll need CMSC's to be sanctioned or recognized by USMS. USMS Rule 105 has, in a couple places, wording to the effect of If you want your swim to count for records and Top Ten, it needs to be in a USMS-Sanctioned or USMS-Recognized event. I am not sure what has been done with this in the past, as I know a lot of PNAers venture to Vancouver to swim MSC meets, but check into that Sanction/Recognition thing if you're going to be setting the pool on fire, eh? :canada:
  • First about eligibility for USMS Top Ten: from the Records & Tabulations Guide to Operations The results achieved by USMS swimmers participating in USA Swimming or FINA Member Federation Sanctioned meets are eligible for Top Ten and records without the need for an official observer to testify that the meet was conducted according to USMS rules, as was the case in the past. Masters World Records can only be set in a Sanctioned Masters Meet. They cannot be established in USA Swimming Meets. I imagine this will be a "FINA sanctioned masters meet" and so it will be, for USMS purposes, a Recognized meet. That means times will be eligible for USMS records and top ten, assuming that the pool measurements are done, etc. But do not assume that the meet director will submit your times for you to USMS! They are under no obligation to do so. It is the responsibility of your LMSC Top Ten Recorder to submit your times for you. Walt Reid -- who certifies records for both USMS and FINA -- maintains a list of (international) measured pools and I've just sent him an email to verify that this pool is on it. But if there is a movable bulkhead, its placement will have to be verified with measurements after each session. Those measurements must be submitted with any record applications, and your Top Ten person will (or should) want to see them. S/he will want a link to the official results as well. It is the swimmer's responsibility to alert his/her Top Ten person to his participation. Best to initiate contact before the meet, rather than after the fact. See this article. Sometimes for big international meets (eg World Championships) where there are a lot of USMS swimmers, the results for all the USMS swimmers will be submitted all at once to the USMS meet results database (instead of having individual LMSCs do it piecemeal), and Mary Beth will process them for Top Ten purposes. But this can be a logistical hassle because the meet may not have the results in a compatible file format (eg, they may not use HyTek) and it can be a problem to identify/cull all the USMS swimmers. With a small number of USMS participants, it is best for the swimmer's individually to alert his/her Top Ten person. Also: for your times to count for USMS purposes, you have to be representing USMS. In other words, if you are also a member of the Canadian swimming federation, don't represent them if you want your times to be eligible for USMS records/top ten listing. Good luck at the meet.
  • The first thing I did was contact PV's Jeff Roddin! He will submit my times if the pool is measured. I believe the Claude Robillard pool is a moveable bulkhead, so they would have to measure the pool (well, they have to if they want USMS times to count). I do not believe that FINA had a measurement requirement, but I would love to hear otherwise. I'm not a member of a Canadian swimming federation, just of French Canadian heritage. :)
  • From the USMS Rule Book, Article 202.2: www.usms.org/.../part2.pdf Chris, in the above case, do pool measurements have to be submitted to USMS? Interesting ... this would suggest not. Or does the phrase "complete documentation" refer to the measurement form?
  • I don't want to travel and not have my times count! As long as the pool measurements are in order, you need not fear that. Your Top Ten recorder contacted me, Walt and Mary Beth 9 days ago about this issue. Jeff is lurking in the background, on top of things. As usual.
  • From the USMS Rule Book, Article 202.2: www.usms.org/.../part2.pdf Chris, in the above case, do pool measurements have to be submitted to USMS? Interesting; I don't recall ever receiving such measurements (as R&T chair) for an international meet. I get them in my role as Top Ten recorder though; I don't see why the meet would be any different than any (domestic) Recognized meet, where only the Top Ten recorder gets the measurements. Of course, in the event a record is broken, the measurements get sent to Walt Reid as part of the record application. If anyone wants to send me the measurements, just to be safe, I will certainly accept them and let your Top Ten person know I received them. PM me if that's the case and I'll give you my contact info (or send the scanned documents to me at recordsandtabulation AT usms DOT org).
  • Of course, in the event a record is broken, the measurements get sent to Walt Reid as part of the record application.Do measurements still matter in a fixed, non-bulkheaded pool? For example, swimming in a long course pool outside the US? I'm toying with swimming a meet in Canada long course at some point this year so I don't have to try to race in the brutal Arizona summer!
