Bobby Patten, showing heretofore unsuspected sprinting chops, took the 50 fly. I suspect he may be a force to reckon with in the 200 fly tomorrow (I think it used to be his best event, long ago). As if that event isn't stacked enough with Sims, Baker (even sick) and Shaffer.
Chris, I didn't know you were a flyer - great swims in the 200 and especially the 100. Bobby is a great competitor, I wish I could have been there to see the race.

Thanks, there was once a time I was a better butterflier than backstroker.
It was, unfortunately, a virtual race since we were not in the same heat. Yet another reason I dislike sandbagging...it would have been nice to have been able to push each other.
Bobby has been regaining his form slowly but surely over the last couple of seasons. He'll be going 50.x in the 100 and low 1:50s in the 200 before too much longer. (I remember him more of a 200 flier back in the day, but he claims to have gotten over that problem.)

Thoughts on the meet,1) there are no easy events, there are fast people in every age group
2) beautiful facility
3)Is it possible for a meet to be too well run?I have never been to a major meet that was as far ahead of the timeline as this one was. That may seem to be a good thing but it confused many people.
4)The staff was wonderful
5)The Gold Medal Sponsor food was fabulous
6)If you take the 200 BR out too slow,even a good 2nd 100 won't catch the leaders.

It looks like you are a pretty dang good butterflier now. It looks like there were a lot of really fast times at this meet
- maybe we don't need those rubber suits after all.
I would guess Bobby was not sandbagging - he was probably surprised by that time. He hasn't gone that fast for a very long time.

Well, as I recall, the 100 fly was Chris' Olympic event.
There were some fast times. But, on the whole, I thought times were almost uniformly slower than the tech suit times (at least in the age groups I'm familiar with). Records were mostly set by stars aging up.
True, Fort. Not just the suits though ... seems the shallow pool in combination with furnace heat/blazing sun/desert winds were not conducive to fast swims. Times in my division's 50 free were a full second slower than last year. That can't all be the suits! (I hope)
Definitely an advantage for people used to swimming outside and/or used to the heat. It would not have agreed with me at all.

Swimming yards outdoors is a foreign concept to me. One of these days, I will do a yards meet in the open air.

It is awesome!!!! I did an outdoors scy meet in St. Pete North Beach Pool in early April; it was the best! There's something about a breeze off the ocean and natural sunshine that just energizes you!
