For me, I just had mine this weekend. :) I was entered in five events: 1.) 50 free, 2.) 200 free, 3.) 100 back, 4.) 100 ***, and 5.) 100 free. old and new PB times: 50fr: the only event I didn't drop time, PB is still 27.53 (Oct '10). 200fr: 2:28.11 (Jul '10)/2:18.99 100 back: 1:23.19 (Oct '10)/1:18.03 100 ***: 1:28.11 (Oct '10)/1:26.73 100 free: 1:02.64 (Oct '10)/1:00.03 FOUR MILLISECONDS AWAY FROM GOING UNDER!!! AAARGH! Still, it was a mega monster 2.5 second drop from my old PB. This month marks two years since I started swimming, though I didn't start competitively until January '09. The piano dropped in none of these events. At the end of each, I was ready to get right back in and race again. The 50 free was just a stupid mistake- I didn't warm up properly, else I would've dropped time there, too. There were lessons to be learned and new mistakes to be avoided after my previous meet last month. I learned them and avoided them. My best meet yet. What about your best meets?
  • PB's without the tech stuff is great ! There is hope for me - maybe !!?? You don't need tech stuff to swim fast. How did we ever do it before the "tech stuff". Practice practice practice. I never really got to use any tech stuff anyway. I finished college swimming before it really got started and didn't restart Masters till it was phasing out.
  • YES YES YES I am finally under the minute! I even skipped 59! And I skipped the teens in the 100 fly! ... I'm not shaved down or tapered at all. ... Man, when I saw my 100 fly time... :bolt: :D Congratulations! Those are great moments.

Unfortunately, I feel like my best meet was last spring when I went 1:01. in the 100 free. But now you are my inspiration. What was the key to breaking a minute?

I have a new best meet! Yesterday, I did 100 back, 100 ***, and 50 free. Today, I did 100 fly and 100 free. My times: 100 back: 1:17.38. PB, by a second, previous PB set last month. 100 ***: 1:24.30. PB, by 4 seconds, previous PB set in October. 50 free: 27.86. Not a PB, but still better than last month's 28.05. 100 fly: 1:11.25. PB, by FIFTEEN seconds, previous PB set in July. 100 free: 58.95. PB, by over a second. Previous PB set last month. YES YES YES I am finally under the minute! I even skipped 59! And I skipped the teens in the 100 fly! I came in first in my heats in both the 100 fly and 100 free. I was four seconds ahead of second place in the 100 free. This 100 free is the first swim I've ever had where I felt like I was literally flying through the water, or on it, or over it, or whatever. I never even knew such a feeling existed. When I dove in, I didn't waste any time with underwaters, I was so parallel to the water and so, so shallow, that I just popped up and started swimming immediately. It may have been my best dive yet... I'm not shaved down or tapered at all. In my 100 ***, I employed a strategy. The dude who was in the lane next to me is on my team. We have very close times. I decided to trail behind him for the first 50, and then I would close in and beat him on the second 50. It worked, by 20 milliseconds. Man, when I saw my 100 fly time... :bolt: :D

But now you are my inspiration. What was the key to breaking a minute? Wow, I've never been an inspiration to anybody. Pretty cool. :) In my 100 free last month, I went 1:00.03. One of the things I did was take a lot of breaths. This tendency was most injurious when I would take a breath on the first stroke off the walls. In my race Sunday night, going under the minute for the first time, I took 4-5 breaths in the entire race and I did not once breathe on the first stroke off any walls. I took one breath in my entire first 50. The place I was at also had a very nice, large scoreboard that displayed everyone's times. When I took my last breath on the last 25, I could see my time up there and it looked like it was at 52 or 53 seconds. Knowing that I was so close to the wall, it only motivated me that much more to get to the damn wall!
  • Awesome progress. :applaud: I'm still waiting for my quantum time drops. I know they're coming. :) Are these SCY?
  • My best meet ever was SC Nationals in Chapel Hill in 1992. I was 50 and did my best ever Masters times. I had been swimming Masters since I was 34 so it was a big deal for me. It was a result of rarely missing practice and putting a little more intensity into my practices.

Depends if by "best meet" one can include meets from a life long past. My college conference meet was prolly my best but it feels like it no longer counts having been more than 10 years ago. :)
  • Yowzer! Those are some serious drops! Reading back, just for the 100 free October 2010 ... 1:02.64 November 2010 .. 1:00.03 December 2010 .... 58.95 July 2011 ........ 53.13 Incredible!
