Ya shoulda been there... weather was great, fast outdoor pool, 10 lanes of warmup/warmdown and it was over before it got dark :agree:: Results: www.pacificmasters.org/.../10wcmscm.html (with splits) www.pacificmasters.org/.../10wcmscmsplit.html
  • I've also been watching swimoregon.org to see if there's going to be a December SCM meet in Portland like there was last year. Sorry, TG, that meet is not happening this year, and I don't know of any replacement.
  • Sorry, TG, that meet is not happening this year, and I don't know of any replacement. Not as many meets this year. And meet attendance, from what I can glean, is down.
  • Not as many meets this year. And meet attendance, from what I can glean, is down.I agree. So, since there hasn't been a good flame war over the suits, let's start one: did USMS make a mistake, at least with respect to encouraging meet attendance, by sending us back to stone-age swimwear?:bolt:
  • I think I'll wait for some stats. The one meet I've attended so far this fall had a lot of swimmers.
  • I think I'll wait for some stats. Amazon.com: How to Lie with Statistics (9780393310726): Darrell Huff, Irving Geis: Books This is a discussion forum ... we're supposed to rely upon raw emotion and passion, not boring old data ;)
  • I think I'll wait for some stats. The one meet I've attended so far this fall had a lot of swimmers. LCM was not that popular last summer, and the Top Ten reflect that fact. Sprint Classic attendance was down in October. A meet in Charlotte was almost cancelled due to low attendance. I'll be curious to see if the VA Beach meet this weekend has lower attendance than last year too. Nor sure I know anyone from PV going, and there usually are some. No CZ SCM meet this December. No PV SCM meet on the schedule for this December. Only 80+ swimmers at the Indy SCM meet last weekend. It didn't appear to me (though not knowledgable in matters of the west coast, to be sure) that there were as many swimmers at the SPMA SCM Champs. I'd like to see further stats as well. But I tend to agree with Patrick. It seems too much of a coincidence to say that everyone got injured, had pressing family obligations, fell ill, decided to take up another sport, got hammered at work, etc, etc. since Atlanta.

Leslie, SPMA? - I think you mean Pacific, perhaps? SPMA's aren't until December. Pacific's meet was about normal size. Michael would know the numbers better but the meet days seemed about the normal length of time. I'll throw my vote in for the lack of full body suits contributing to smaller meet participation. :anim_coffee:

I think it makes a difference too, though perhaps moreso for the 40+ crowd. For me, it's effecting my choice of events. I wonder if perhaps the big meets will be well attended still, but in season meet attendance will decline? Or fewer people will travel for in season meets now?
  • I'm going to a meet next weekend in Bend, which is about 2 1/2 hours from here and 3 1/2 from Portland. It's an SCM pentathlon with the same venue, basic format, and time of year as last year. I'll be interested to compare numbers from this year to last when I get them. It should be a pretty true apples to apples look at participation, although the loss of the December SCM meet in Portland may tend to increase participation at this meet. I don't think the suits will have much of an impact one way or the other on how many show up. To the extent I think about it at all, I like how quickly and easily I can get my race suit on now, but it really isn't that big an issue. My guess, based on nothing at all, is that participation will be down.
