Redburn: Thanks for the reply. This occurs after 50yrds and subsides after 20 sec. I'm off to Pulmonary Function Tests next week. I can soft sand run, bike, surf, paddle and row with out issue.

AnnG: Thanks for the reply. My Pulmonary Doc. has ruled out EIB and I'm going for a Pulmonary Function Test. I can run, bike, row, surf, and paddle without issue.
  • I've never had those, but I do have terrible esophagus spasms regularly. It is a part of my acid reflux. I've actually been hospitalized with it before. I'll sometimes have a spasm if I'm swimming a really hard set. I'm usually straining without knowing it. Hope you get some answers soon.

If you google either of these, you get several potential medical causes for each. I, myself have had Laryngospasms, but only during intense backstroke sets, never with any of the other strokes. I never have complete closure of the airway, it just feels like one or two cords are "out of place" and hurts a bit when swallowing. Usually, a brief massage of the affected area of the larynx does the trick for me. Than I lighten up for a few repeats and get back to it!
  • Could it be exercised induced asthma? You don't need audible wheezing for it to be asthma, talk to your doctor about trying an inhaler.
