Goggles are hard to find that fit one's face. It will be interesting to know how many different goggles one uses. Maybe some are for lap swim, some are for open water, some are for race? Some people do seem to have a lot of goggles, from the "what is in your swim bag" thread, and I wonder if all those goggles are the same or different?
:cool:
Just one pair :blush:
Yes I use them for practice and meets and I will tighten them for meets and then just leave them tight until the next meet when I may tighten them again. Somehow though I always seem to have enough strap left.
I do carry a spare pair just in case.
Ah, relieved to find another "one pair of goggles" person! Just bought a new pair of Kaiman Aquasphere--a friend recommended and lent me a pair for an open water swim I did in July, and I loved them! They were more than I usually spend for goggles, so I may also pick up a pair of Hydrospex for mainly pool use to replace the ones that I have now that are very, very beat up. That way, I figure both pairs will last longer. I like the Hydrospex pretty much, and they've been comfortable, but I was really glad to have the Aquasphere for my long swim.
Someone suggested keeping goggles in a container with water and a dollop of chlorine removal shampoo between practices.
I remember that post, too. I wonder if soaking it in the shampoo/soap all the time might speed the deterioration of the gasket (silicone or otherwise)?
I should also add, since we're talking goggles here, I found a great piece of advice on goggle maintenance on these forums over the spring.
Someone suggested keeping goggles in a container with water and a dollop of chlorine removal shampoo between practices. I've been doing that with mine, and they have held up much longer than my last pair did, and have a tendency to fog less. I forget who mentioned it, but great advice, thank you!
I only wear Speedo Hydrospex. Clear ones for inside and shaded ones outside. I have 5-10 pairs because I tend to treat myself to a new pair before an event because the anti-fog only lasts so long and everything is so clear at first.
I'm sure there must be equal or better goggles around but every single other goggle I have ever tried has leaked so I'm never going to switch. Even the new version of Hydrospex leaked immediately so I hope they keep the now dubbed "classic" version around.

Herb, try Ande's tip on keeping your goggles clear for a race: Put a dab of baby shampoo in your goggles, then rinse. I tried that trick after my "anti-fog" goggles fogged and it worked great! :applaud:
Update to earlier post on this thread: The Aqua Sphere Kayenne Ladies goggle was awesome until it started flooding- relentlessly! It turns out that not only was mine defective; the whole production run of them were defective. SwimOutlet.com discontinued them and they can't be found on other websites, either, except for Aqua Sphere.
SwimOutlet.com gave EXCELLENT customer service to solve the problem: Paid for postage to return them and paid for expedited postage to rush out the goggles I chose to replace them.
Women's Vanquishers in:
* Green (just replaced them with a fresh pair today, actually)
* Violet (works well inside and out)
* Clear (for dark pools, will need replacing next)
Swedes in:
* Green
* Blue
* Mirrored (for outside)
I use the Vanquishers most of the time and occasionally break out the Swedes when I'm feeling old-school.
All are on bungees because not only are the factory-supplied straps hard to adjust when wet, my shaky hands make the job even more frustrating. If the coach throws in some starts at the end of practice, I yank them a little tighter and I'm good to go.
I picked up a pair of the socket rockets the other day. I really like them a lot. But I still like my vanquishers, too.
I love socket rockets, they're the only pair of goggles I can wear. I will warn you - they'll stretch, you can tighten them, they'll be fine. Then one day they just kind of break. So always have a spare on hand. Unless you have time to clip off some of the excess from the strap and make a new nose bridge.
They're like lithium ion batteries - they generate 99.999% of their max power until suddenly they're just dead. (As opposed to nickel cadmium batteries which I believe start @ 100% and gradually lose their ability to generate power (so a gradually declining slope).)

Good to know. I'll see how these hold up. If any piece of gear starts becoming high maintenance, it gets replaced pronto, but hopefully these will last me a good long while.
I'm always trying new gear. Maybe I'll pick up a pair of socket rockets. If those are less likely to give me goggle eyes, maybe I can use them whenever I need to be stealthy.
