Hopefully someone out there will be able to help me...
I have been running Hy-tek's TM 4.0 on my computer since 2006 to manage the high school team that I coach. Sadly, my laptop died a few weeks before the end of our last season (we're a fall sport in Idaho). I installed the program on my new laptop, which runs Vista, and could not get it to work. The program installs, but when I tried to run it, I got errors messages galore. I managed to get through the rest of the season on a borrowed computer.
Now that school is finally out for the summer, and I have some spare time, I decided to tackle it again. I uninstalled and re-installed the program with the same results -- several times. I contacted Hy-tek and was informed that as of Jan 1, they no longer offer support for TM 4.0. Lovely. I was also informed that since I had ordered the label upgrade in 2007, that I should have the version of TM 4.0 that works on Vista.
I am very frustrated at this point. Has anyone else been able to run TM 4.0 with Vista? Hy-tek is being very unhelpful. They just keep telling me that I can order the newest upgrade for only $125. What a bargain -- for software that originally cost less than $70.
Thanks for any advice,
Kristi

I had a different problem with an older version of Hy-Tek and found a "problems" page on their web site. You may have already seen this, but just in case...
www.hy-tekltd.com/Hy-SP2.html
Problem: Installing on VISTA.
Cause: This problem is due to the recent VISTA Operating System requiring a new Installer.
Solution: Since VISTA requires a new installer, Hy-Tek began shipping this new installer in January 2007. If your CD was provided to you previous to January 2007, you will need to order a CD replacement either by calling the Sales Office toll free at 866.456.5111 or ordering it Online at www.hy-tekltd.com/store.
Notes: The way to tell if your CD has the new installer, look at the files with Windows Explorer. If you have only 2 files, then you have the new installer. If you have 14 or 15 files, then you have the old installer and need to order a CD replacement.
Applies To: ALL Hy-Tek Windows desktop products.
I am very frustrated at this point. Has anyone else been able to run TM 4.0 with Vista?
Although I am unfamiliar with that software and I know this is a SWIMMING forum, I would recommend you upgrade to Windows 7. I did a lot of research on both operating systems and can tell you that Vista has caused A LOT of people A LOT of problems. You may want to research this for yourself and decide; it may cause you a lot of heartache and frustration in the future.
Good luck!
Thank you so much for the tip Anna. Both of my CDs from 06 and 07 have two files, so supposedly I have the new installer, which is odd considering that my CD from 06 was before they starting shipping the new installer. I need to find someone else who has Vista and see if maybe it's just something with my computer. I wasn't familiar with the link to the "problems" page, so it's good to know that it's there.
Elaine,
I am unsure as to how to interpret you "good luck" since you obviously feel that I have over-stepped forum rules by posting my question in the first place. It's up to the site administrators to determine if threads are appropriate for the forum, and I do not appreciate your slap on the wrist. Hy-tek, TM is a SWIMMING program, and I do not see that it is a problem to ask a question about a SWIMMING program on a SWIMMING forum.

No, NO- not at all! You came to the right place for advice! You just misunderstood my intentions... What I meant by saying it's a "SWIMMING forum" is that I don't want to deviate from swimming by going on and on about COMPUTER stuff! But, I did want to warn you about the evils of Vista without turning this into a computer-related thread. :blah: That, I'm afraid, would have some of the forumites all over my case, I'm sure...
So, Kristilynn, my "good luck" was a :cheerleader:, because I understand the frustration of computer problems all to well... Been there, done that, and I hate it more than anything! :bitching:
So, rather than a slap on the wrist, I'm offering you a :cheerleader: :cheerleader: :cheerleader: OK?
Thank you for the clarification Elaine. I know that a lot of people have had problems with Vista, but it's kind of what I'm stuck with right now.
On another note, has anyone upgraded to the latest TM (I think it's 6.0?). It's sooo much more expensive. Does it really do all that much more?
Have you tried running TM in compatibility(?) mode?
I don't have Vista, but recall that you can right click a program icon and run it in XP mode or some other compatibility mode.
I think this was how we got TM 4.0 to run on a Vista machine a couple of years ago. I'd have to check with the owner of that system to make sure of exactly what we did.
Hey Kristi,
It took me a while, but I finally was able to find someone who had posted the Team Manager 4 lite installer (the free one). I installed it on my Win 7 laptop, and so while Win 7 isn't Vista, they share enough of the same codebase that it should work.
Sure enough, when I ran the shortcut, I got lots of cryptic messages and it eventually crashed. What I wound up doing is running the program as administrator.
The usual way to do this in Vista/Win 7 is to right click the application in question, and select "Run as administrator". But the TM shortcut on the desktop doesn't have that option.
So if you can't do that, do this instead:
1. Right click your Team Manager shortcut on your desktop (or where ever it is), and select "Properties".
2. Choose the "Compatibility" tab.
3. Near the bottom, in the "Privilege level" area, check the "Run this program as an administrator" checkbox (highlighted in attached screenshot). Then click OK.
4. Now try running the program this time. It should work (and don't forget to run the update feature in the program!).
If for some reason you can't find this checkbox option, you can navigate to c:\program files\swim team manager 4.0 (c:\program files (x86)\swim team manager 4.0 on a 64 bit computer). Then right click the "TM4.exe" application, and select "Run as administrator".
Hopefully this works for you. If not, send me an email, and I can see about coming up with something else.

Now that I see Patrick's solution (run as Administrator), I think that's what we did to get TM 4.0 to run on a Vista laptop a couple of years ago.
I do recall seeing the "Run as Administrator" in the right-click drop-down box in Vista, but if it isn't there Patrick's suggestions should work.
