Do you want the tech suit back for SCY?

I'm curious about how general membership that frequents the forums feels about this.
  • I'm with you, Allison. And, for that matter, Osterber and Knelson... Yikes! :afraid: Irony abounds here.
  • Irony abounds here. By the way, the "Yikes" and ":afraid:" was in regard to Knelson's post. I agree; that argument belongs behind closed doors, not on this forum. There are some mean statements being thrown out! As for my statement having "irony", please explain... Whether you were serious or sarcastic, I don't have a clue how "irony" comes into play here...
  • The intent of this thread was to do a quick sampler poll, I'd appreciate it if people stuck to the original topic. Derailing threads is also inappropriate. Sounds good to me!
  • wonder if there is way to only have the poll and like be able to disable the reply post so know one can make any comments. Seems like that would have been a good option for this poll. That way all the personal attacks could have been left out. This is masters swimming and have not seen this much drama since high school but the tech suit debate seems to bring it out all the time. Great idea! Jim or Anna Lea, do either of you know if this is possible? If not, it would be a great idea to set this up on the website!
  • That way all the personal attacks could have been left out. What's the fun in that? We have veiled threats, unveiled unknown threats, threatening people to not veil threats yet threatening us to stay on task in the thread, demands for resignation, impeachment procedures, people who whined about the suits telling others not to whine about the suits, etc. And, then, of course, we have wookie(e) and his weirdness - that's both unveiled and off topic. I didn't even vote in the poll.
  • Noone is preventing people from putting together a poll, wherever they want, and however they want to run it. They can do it here just as anonymously. t. Here's my question, why are people wasting time on a poll when FINA and USMS have spoken?! Give it a rest until 2013. This is just getting :cane: Give it up.
  • Where it falls into having to follow the rules, is when an LMSC is asked to pay for it financially, and by use of it's volunteering resources. Typically, LMSC's don't have the kinds of resources it takes to run informal polls, just for the sake of statistics. They are constantly battling shorthandedness in just getting much more pressing business at hand. Historically, there's about 10-20 volunteers that represent the core group that services, in our LMSC over 4000 swimmers, and around 70 clubs (I'd have to look up the statistics to be more exact). Expensive? We use iContact (not Club Assistant) to manage our email communications. The cost is pretty reasonable (MUCH less than our paper newsletter costs every month), and it includes the ability to do surveys of the type you describe. As a bonus, if you wish it limits the survey to the people subscribed to the list (ie, LMSC members). There have to be other online survey tools that are reasonably cheap. This one looks free: http://www.kwiksurveys.com But of course there is no need to do a poll just to suggest a rule change. I suppose the idea is to strengthen the case for tech suits, but of course there is no guarantee that it will do that. You can run the poll after the deadline, though.
  • You asked earlier about why I want to break out the answers to the "poll" questions. It is simple. Just like in a research paper, the author starts out with a particular hypothesis. The research either confirms that hypothesis or not. I suspect that the majority of obsessive swimmers would want the suits. A smaller majority of competitive swimmers would also want the suits. Triathletes.......I have no clue. Fitness swimmers, I suspect a majority would not want the suits. Those are just my guesses and I might be totally wrong. That's what I figured, and while I find these interesting questions and speculations, addressing them wouldn't be MY main purpose in a poll. (Of course, if it happens, the rest of the LMSC board will get their say too.) The purpose drives the questions, as you might imagine. My main purposes would be (a) to assess the potential impact on participation in SCY, SCM and LCM meets and (b) to assess how much impact having the suit (or not) would have on enjoyment of the sport. To elaborate on (b)...I suspect those "obsessive" people you comment about will compete whether or not the suit is legal, but they may not like it as much. So banning the suit would not impact the participation of those people but I still want them to get have their "say," so to speak. A quality of life type of thing.
  • Here's my question, why are people wasting time on a poll when FINA and USMS have spoken?! Maybe they don't feel it's wasting time. As of now it looks like the proposal is only to change the rule for SCY competition, so really the FINA decision doesn't enter into it. I'm all for the membership voicing their opinion on a matter they feel strongly about. Just because USMS made a decision doesn't mean it can't be modified or reversed. And I'll admit when I first saw the other thread mentioning the SPMA proposal my initial instinct was "not this again."
