I'm curious about how general membership that frequents the forums feels about this.

I personally do not want the tech suit back, it was fun while it lasted. I'm looking at it as a new challenge to swim same times or faster without the tech suit. Since Nationals in Atlanta I have shed 10 pounds and getting leaner so I am ready for the short course season.
Im actually looking forward to swimming the old fashion way, enjoying the shave down at the big meet etc.
Just follow what FINA has decided and start training harder and smarter and embrace the new challenge rather than continuing to beat the already dead horse.
And to continue... FINA has removed tech suits from competition. FINA also doesn't allow fins, zoomers, pull buoys, outboard motors, or lots of other devices.
If you want to bring back tech suits, you might as well start arguing that masters swimmers should be able to compete using pull buoys. After all, it makes most of you faster, right? Let's allow pulling on the lane lines in masters. After all, we're old and fat and can't follow the same rules that real swimmers follow.
One other thing to note -- if there is a demand for people feeling good about themselves using tech suits, then someone should setup a tech suit meet. The USMS rules allow for non-conforming races to be held under USMS sanction, so long as it doesn't pose a safety risk. The times don't count, of course. But you're free to setup a meet where you offer events:
50 free with tech suit
50 free with fins
50 free with tech suit and fins
50 free with tech suit and fins and paddles
50 free with tech suit, fins, paddles, and pull buoy
If people show up, great. Have fun with that.
However, for official organized competition, I'd prefer that we look to follow the same set of rules that the entire rest of the world swimming community is following, and shut up about it already.

Can I attach an 'outboard', please, oh, please, pretty please!!! My kick sucks, and it would make me feel so much better!
Connie,
I am sorry about your situation out there at SPMA. It sounds like things are going through some tough times, and as a member of USMS, thank you for your commitment to USMS.
Now I don't know you personally, and I have been reading this thread. I think that if you maybe looked back at some of the previous threads/polls that have been posted on the website you could have gotten an idea by asking this question you opening up a thread that people tend to get bent out of shape about. Maybe you did this before posting, I don't know. I think that for me, personally, I am tired of hearing about the tech suits. I am fine with saying that I am one of those people that I don't care either way, it is not going to affect my swimming. I am going to continue to set goals and train hard with or without them. This is just one of those heated topics that many people on this forum will say possibly hurtful things without meaning to.
I hope that you are able to find the answers that you are looking for, and I hope that your organization is able to have its members actively take part in this discussion.
By the way, the "Yikes" and ":afraid:" was in regard to Knelson's post. I agree; that argument belongs behind closed doors, not on this forum. There are some mean statements being thrown out!
Unfortunatley, they are true.
Frankly, I'm sick of little veiled jabs of 'not swimming, and out of shape, and shouldn't count etc etc', and long beyond caring.
Since I don't count, I can say whatever I damn well please. Can't have it both ways. Count one minute, and not count the next.
Oh, wait, I know how the game here works, my name was never actually mentioned, so it's okay. Veiled jabs, alusions and vague references to emailed jujnk that noone can read and antagonisam is fine, as long as you actually don't mention someones name, people will gloss over it, and the mods can't do anything about it. :shakeshead: I know, should have finenssed it better. :shakeshead: Or better yet, shut up and take it. :shakeshead::shakeshead::shakeshead:
At this point, like I said, since I don't count *eyeroll*, I'm beyond caring. The truth will come out in the end, and I know what side of it I'm on, and this is not being 'tried' via public forum opinions anyway.
The intent of this thread was to do a quick sampler poll, I'd appreciate it if people stuck to the original topic. Derailing threads is also inappropriate.
Maybe they don't feel it's wasting time. As of now it looks like the proposal is only to change the rule for SCY competition, so really the FINA decision doesn't enter into it. I'm all for the membership voicing their opinion on a matter they feel strongly about. Just because USMS made a decision doesn't mean it can't be modified or reversed.
And I'll admit when I first saw the other thread mentioning the SPMA proposal my initial instinct was "not this again."
Again, it just makes Masters Swimming look like whiners to outsiders in swimming. The new rule just went in to effect 21 days ago. Drop it and live with it people!
wonder if there is way to only have the poll and like be able to disable the reply post so know one can make any comments. Seems like that would have been a good option for this poll. That way all the personal attacks could have been left out.
This is masters swimming and have not seen this much drama since high school but the tech suit debate seems to bring it out all the time.
people who want the tech suit back need to stop complaining, and move forward and DO something. SPMA gave them the green light.
SPMA can't get inside their head, figure out what they want and do it for them. Ahelee is the secretary, and has access to knowing how things are done, and is in favor of the tech suit, she can be helping Pat do something, rather then complaining here someone is trying to shut them up, or speculating about my motivations.
People who want the tech suit back need to get off the soapboxes, and get out of their quarterback armchairs, and DO, DO, DO, DO something through appropriate channels.
Seriously? Can't people just go with what FINA and USMS have ruled and let it go already!
It's a good way to get yourself removed from office, which is about to happen, unless, hopefully you resign first, as you have been asked to.
Wow, that's kind of harsh.
